Marine 302

I've got a bare marine 302 block. Is the marine block any better than a stock block? I've heard the block is thicker and a better metal mixture too. Does anyone know for sure? The one downside I have heard is that ocassionally the water jackets scale up because they are cooled by salt water when in a boat. I heard machine shops can fix that if it isnt bad. I just would like to know the advantages/disadvantages of a marine block. THANKS!!
