fuel mileage test results

I was reading an article a while back that was talking about the best ways to conserve fuel and it said that for every 10 mph you do over 55mph you lose 3-4 mpg. I decided to do some tests with different fuel additives and speeds. My driving style stayed the same for all tests with the only difference being my cruising speed. All tests were done on the same roads also(hilly terrain going from tn to wv). My truck is a 97 f250, reg cab, XL, 5 speed with 4.10 gears. Nothing in the truck but me(no tool boxes, passengers, junk, etc).

Trip 1- Plain fuel with no additives doing 55 mph. 363 miles/16.8 gallons=21.6 mpg.

Trip 2-Plain fuel with no additives doing 65 mph. 320 miles/17.2 gallons=18.6 mpg. Lost 3 mpg.

Trip 3-Added power service(white bottle) additive doing 55 mph. 350 miles/15 gallons=23.3 mpg.

Trip 4-Power service(white bottle) additive doing 65 mph. 393 miles/19.9 gallons=19.7 mpg. Lost 3.6 mpg.

It looks like riding around at 55 mph instead of 65 saved 3-4 mpg and the fuel additive helped about 1-2 mpg. I'm running the same tests with the power service gray bottle right now and will try it with lucas brand next.

i have noticed the biggest difference with staying under 5 psi boost and under 2000 rpm.
my max economy has been at 1500 rpm which is roughly 55 mph

It also makes a big difference that you have the 410's
3.55's, might be able to fudge a little higher w/out losing 3mpg

Don't expect much from Lucas. Bad stuff. Read this additive test http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/68...n-thelist.html

ditto for the 3.55s, there is a bright side to having the higher gears for sure. and if you have the time, try the 2-cycle for an additive and let us know how it works for you

Very informative phillips91, keep up the good work. Reps sent.
Loking forward to your next test results.

I usually watch the boost age when trying to safe fuel, keep it under 5-6 psi and under 60 MPH seems to be my best....22MPG empty, dead flat terrain. Crew cab, 4x4, 4:10's. I only got that once though...when I first got the truck....18MPG is the best I get now.

Well, DP has an 80 Econo tune, Tony doesn't give his settings HP ratings because they differ from truck to truck. But yes it was in the Economy setting .

scatgo-after reading that article you sent, i think im going to cancel the lucas portion of my test lol. it looks like just plain used oil is better than the lucas.

robbgt-oh, it kills me having to do 55 mph too. but with my job i usually drive about 1000-1500 miles per week and i need to find the best ways to save on fuel. just doing 55 instead of 65 saves me about 10-15 gallons a week.

ive got all the materials to make a few test batches of bio too. once i get enough mixed up to amount to anything ill run some tests with it too.

about the 2 cycle oil....is there any particular brand that is the best to use, or just any old 2 cycle oil will do? this is my first diesel, so i dont really know what to try other than whats on the shelf especially for diesels.

Thats about how many miles I do in a month if that! Of course I go to school full time and live here, 200 mile round trip to go to-from home usually every weekend for work/see girlfriend. I don't know what I'd do if i drove that much a week!!!

my normal round trip drive to work is about 80 miles. but i usually have two or three trips each week that range from 300-500 miles round trip. the good thing is that i get paid mileage for the long trips. im just trying to find ways to maximize my profits.
