1992 crown victoria p72

I recently purchased a 1992 crown victoria for $316.00 at an auction. The car runs like a top and when sitting at a light its so smooth and quiet you think it stalled. Anyway other than a rusty spot on the frame which I have repaired the car is in like new condition with 105,000 miles. The question I have is based on the p72 in the vin number. My insurance agent claims this is a former police cruiser? It does have a certified calibration speedometer that reads a top speed of 140 mph and it does have stainless steel dual exhaust to go along with the cop car hubcaps but the car has no holes for the bar or the spotlight. There are no holes or wires for police radios either so how can it be a police car? Its a 1992 with 105,000 certified original miles, should'nt it be alot higher? Can my insurance company really charge me more based on the vin # info?

A lot of cars purchased by various police departments are not equipped with the lights and shotgun holders etc. Perhaps a police chief's official car which might account for the low mileage.

In any case, it sounds like you found a good deal.... $316? Wow!

P72 is the CVPI or police issued crown vic. The calibrated speedo is the dead giveaway other than the P72 as well as the dual exhaust. That is a hell of a steal, I bought a '92 P72 parts car for around that price. Sounds like it could have been a detective car or an officers car or maybe even a private security car, as mine was. If you had some frame rust check all your brake and fuel lines, my '92 GMQ has some terrible rot on all those lines from living in the midwest most its life.

yeah its a cop car....

I decided to spend a few bucks on a vin # check and found out it does have the police package but never saw police cruiser duty,it was originally purchased by the government and assigned to the FBI. It spent it's entire service life in New York and according to the wikipedia p72 is the code for the police package until 1993 when it was changed to p71. The website for crown vic owners also states the vin code was changed from p72 to p71 in 1993.
