93 IDI to 97 Powerstroke?

As the title states does anyone have any expierence going from a 1997 F250 Powerstroke and swapping it into 1993 F250 with a blown 7.3 IDI? My 1993 is blown but I could buy a wrecked 1997 with a powerstroke. I know I have to swap the computers but I was wondering if there is any wiring show stoppers, like connectors that aren't there or something else? Thanks for any input or help!

If you have the other truck and it is complete you have it licked. You will figure it out pretty quick on what you need and what you don't.

I don't of anything specific that would give you any trouble. It will bolt in.

You will have to swap throttle pedal and the entire engine wiring harness.

Yes Power Strokes have a lot of wires not found in an IDI truck.

Looking for more wiring help?

I know I'll have to swap the wires and computer for the engine because they seem to be seperate from the chassis wiring. I'm looking for someone with expierence doing this swap for pointers. Also where does the engine wiring connect into the chassis wiring. I think thats gonna be my biggest stumbling block.

I've also heard theres a manual somewhere that does a step by step instruction to do this swap. Anyone heard of it?

Power Strokes are fly by wire.

The throttle is wired into the computer, the computer fires the injectors.

Best bet, buy the donor truck, strip the wiring harness out of yours.
Then strip the wiring harness out of the Power Stroke truck and install it in yours.

It can be done, but don't expect to swap motors and fire it up.
Probably for a week or so working on it every day for 8 hours or more.

I'm going for it!

Well I'm gonna buy the truck here this weekend and hopefully in the next few weeks get the engine swapped. After that I'll probably tinker with the electronics after work for a few weeks to get it going. When you guys say the wiring harness do you mean the entire harness for the truck or just for the engine. I've looked at it and it seems the wiring harness to the rear end and headlights is the same. The new wiring harness obviously has some new wires. Does anyone know if the headlights and rear end are the same or different? Also can the new computers plug right into my dash gauges or do I have to swap that too? Once I got it going I'll post some pics! Thanks!

Swap everything would probably be the easiest way unless your dash is exactly like the one in the Power Stroke.
Even if it is exactly alike, the connectors may or may not be the same.

I have not spent enough time on wiiring on a 93, but I can tell you that on my 86 the left headlight, turn signal and marker lights are in their own harness.

So is the rear lights, fuel senders and tank selector valve.

But the right side head light, turn signal and marker lights are right in the main chassis harness with all the gauge wires, power wires and warning light wires.

I would be very surprised if there were any plug ins for any of the Power Stroke electronics on your truck, the Power Stroke motor was still 1.5 years down the road when they made yours.

what shape is the wrecked truck in? might be easyer to do a body swap if the frame is straight and you have acces to the right stuff.

If you swap the ps into the 93 remove all the wiring conected to the ecm in any whay from the 97 then install it in the 93 along with anything the wiring hooks in to on the 97.
Also what tranie are in them? if they are autos I belive the 97 will have a 6 bolt torque converter and the 93 will have a 4 bolt. also the TCM on the 97 is proble wired in to the ECM/IDM. so you would have to swap the TCM over if they are manuals it should be gravy. If the 97 is an auto and the 93 is a manual you will need to run a clutch swich to the ECM/IDM where it would read the nutal from the TCM unless it uses a data link between the moduals then I'm not sure what you could do. And If the 97 is a manual and the 93 is an auto swap the manual over otherwise you would have to get a harness and TCM for an auto.

Manual Trans

I have manual transmissions in both so it will be easy as far as that. I assume the TCM and ECM are the two computers in the truck. Is the TCM the dashboard computer? I found where I can find get the ford shop manuals online so thats a resource. It was suggested to swap bodies but I have a supercab and the wrecked truck is a regular cab. My shop I was going to use dropped out on me so I'm suffering a slight set back.

TCM- transmission control module. Since both the trucks you're working with are manuals, you won't have to worry about it.

Kick off time

Well I started the project today. Tore out most of the 93's engine wiring, about all that's left is to the starter motor and the power distribution box in the 93. Should be a fun project will keep pictures and posts coming.

How do I post pics? Just tried and got stumped!
