400-460 swap

400-460 swap
Ok, i posted this in longer form in the 'engine swap' forum, and it has yet to see any love. Mainly, im hoping Mil1ion will swing by and let me revel in his unlimited knowledge, but info from anyone would be great. I have a 77 F150 Ranger Flareside. The two 351's and 400 that i went through in little less than 2.5k miles are long gone, (rods), and the cracked case C-6 is layin on the floor.
The plan in general is to put a 73' 460 (.040 over) in my truck, reared by a ZF-5 trans. The truck will remain a 4x4. Ive heard that i need to swap out my 351m/400 towers for the 460 towers... Is this true? And the towers that have the bolt through type motor mounts, are they a different tower, or is it just the mm that is different? Next, what t-cases are commonly found behind the ZF's, and which one is the most coveted, unless im mistaken, the 205 would be best to keep if possible, so is there a way to mate the 205 (married) to the ZF without resorting to AA?
On a side note, ive seen lots of ppl talking about cluster pieces interchanging with cluster peices that are newer. Is that just the printed circuit? My circuit is fine, but the crumbly white back half of the cluster is, in need for a better word, rough shape. Also, has anyone learned a nifty trick to supply the guage lights power, like a pinned light the by chance fits the cluster, and hard wiring the gauges, to remove the printed circuit alltogether?
Sorry for being so long winded, and thanks a ton guys. New job permiting, this thread will hopefully mutate into my build thread here in about a month

Try more "searches" on this swap. L&L makes the goodies for the motor mounts, and headers. As for the trans-I would imagine someone makes an adapter to fit the Np205 behind that ZF-5. I'm guessing the ZF-5 would have a borg-warner behind it?
try; Installing a 460 -- The Right Way!
Get used to doing searches, its all out there somewhere-its how I found all my info.
Good luck!

I believe I have seen motor mount plates that adapt the 460 to fit into a 4X4. How they work is that the plates bolt onto the engine block, then the original 400 or 351 mounts bolt to these plates, and you can use the stock towers and everything. One other thing you will have to do is get a rear sump oil pan for the 460, and don't forget the oil pick-up tube and main cap bolt to support it as well. You can find these pans on 80 and up trucks with 460's and also can find them in vans. Just check the wrecking yards. Check ebay for the mount plates, I think I seen them on there.

We put in 460 in my son's 79 Bronco at Christmas. We used L&L motor mounts. They worked perfect, dropped right on to the frame rails. We also used the 7 quart oil pan/pickup.and the shorty headers. If you have a lift you might not need to swap oil pans. Had I known it was that easy I would have put the 460 in my 78 years ago.

I'm using transdapt mounts, they are nearly identical to L&L, just that happens to be the brand that jegs had in stock You will use your 351M/400 towers with these mounts. The ZF5 has a hydraulic clutch where the old trucks are all lever style, you'll have to fab this part of the project. You'll most likely be using either A) the newer borg-warner trans cases that came behind ZF trannies or B) remote mount NP205 and a 2wd ZF. In a stock truck I would definitely prefer the brogwarner t case, and I happen to have one I may part with from a 94 F350 dually 4x4.

When I first put a 460 in my 75 4x4 that had a 360 originally. I used the car mounts. Just drilled holes from front to back on the towers and stuck the bolts through with washers to space it out. I also used the rear sump oil pan with corresponding oil pump and pickup and the side dipstick that went through the pan. That was back in 92 and now its a built 429 but still running the same setup.

Thanks for all the info everyone! I have an 8qt rear sump already, high volume oil ect ect. Was just the motor mount tower that had me boggled. Another reason for this post, is that it will likely (hopefully) evolve into my build thread, also, its handy to have all this info in one spot : )

I did mine with the stock 360/390 towers(4x4), bought some stock motor mounts for the same, drilled 2 holes in the mm to fit the 429/460 block(cut rubber out to clear bolt heads) and it bolted in fine! I did however change the whole drivetrain, so I don't know if that would space the engine differently-front to back. Found the info in here!

There are other options than new towers
My truck has the swap from a 400 to a 460. There are conversion kits that allow you to use the original 400 motor mounts with a 460. There are basically two steel adapter plates, one for either side of the engine. They have been in the truck for the last 20 years and I have had no issues with them whatsoever. It is nothing more that an adapter plate, I'm sure you could find a set on the cheap.
