PS Pump Reservoir Leaking?????

Has anyone run into this on a 1979 F150 (400 cu in;2WD;Auto;noCC) PS Pump ???

There is a leak which lets drops of fluid congregate on the bottom of the reservoir. The drops fall from there on to the fuel hose and then to the ground. It is a slow leak but it occurs even when cold. The fluid level drops by one or two inches per month.

After some troubleshooting and use of duct tape to isolate the source it appears that the leakage is from the seam between the metallic front plate and the reservoir body that the filler neck is a part of. What material is the reservoir made of?? It appears to be a strong hi density black plastic but I am not sure. It could be a cast metal.

Has anybody found cracks or leaks on this unit and if so what is a good fix?? JB Weld??

It is not the swivel output since I have covered off this with a towel and tape but leak still appears. Neither is the leak from the pulley bearing.

I've used JB Qwik several times on P/S components...works for a while and then when I notice a leak again use a little more. Probably should get it fixed properly though to prevent any other damage.

it slides off, normally have to work it off with a screw driver, not sure about still getting o-ring,it may come with a filter (there's also a filter inside)
I have sealed them with silicon

1978 and later F100/350 P/S pump

There are two different Ford P/S pumps used in the 1970's and both have round reservoirs.

F100/350's & Bronco's used Ford pumps (round reservoir).

Econolines used the Saginaw pump, which does not have a round reservoir.

F100/350 & Bronco: The pumps (and the P/S hoses) changed in 1978.

The newer style pump uses a plastic dipstick, its handle is about 2" in diameter. The reservoir is plastic.

The earlier pumps have a metal dipstick, the shield below the handle is about 3/4" in diameter.

The 1978 and later pump does not have a filter inside it.
-------------------------------------------------------
I doubt you'll find just the O-Ring, you'll need the P/S pump seal kit.

1978/2008

E1AZ3B584A .. P/S Pump Seal Kit (replaces D8AZ3B584A & D9AZ3B584A-this kit is used thru 2008 on some Ford cars & trucks).

MSRP: $10.40 / ftepartsguy.com price: $7.49

My pump, from this info, is the newer plastic reservoir Ford type. It also appears that there is a very fine hairline crack in the bottom of the reservoir.

I have not been able to locate just the plastic reservoir.

What if I remove reservoir; run it through the dishwasher and clean thoroughly; use JB Weld on the cracks (both sides, inside and outside) and reassemble using a new O-Ring ?????

The reservoir is still available from Ford, the original 1978 part number has been replaced by a newer part number.

You also have to change the dipstick.

It's very common for Ford to update part numbers.

dump it man

I've had hella issues with power steering pumps. My advice is to buy a whole new reman from carquest. You pull that thing apart and for some reason it just doesn't like you anymore. After you get the core money back you might be out like 20 bucks. Which is good for the lack of headache in my book.
