Ignition Switch Removal. 87 F-350

On another post, it is suggested that I replace the ignition switch. Has anybody done this? Where is the switch located? Is it directly attached to the ignition key assembly? Any book out there that will give a step by step direction? Since we are not 100% positive that it is the ignition switch, I was thinking of going to the local pay and pull and get one from there to try it out. Any body know what years if any will interchange?
Thanks

The ignition switch is on top of the steering column down near the firewall. It is attached to the key cylinder by way of a gear and a rod.

Can the ignition switch be cleaned with some electrical contact spray? I am hoping that the switch is just gummed up and the spray may clean the contacts, and I am looking/wishing for an easy fix.

maybe but taking it apart and then putting it back together again to find out it does not work may not be the way to go.

price the switch first and then make a decision.

i advise to disconnect the battery before playing around with the switch.

Replacing the switch is an easy fix. It's one piece and you just remove the old one from the harness and attach the new one.

I found dropping the column in my '90 was the easiest way to get at it. I did it in the parking lot on lunch break with crappy tools in the middle of last summer. If you have an automatic you'll need to remove the gear shift indicator cable for the column to come down.

You CAN get to it without dropping the column, but lining up the actuator rod is much easier if you just set it down.

EDIT: Yes, as QL says, disconnect the battery first lol. Zzaaap!
