2004 trailer wiring problem

I just found this site today while I was looking for an answer to my problem. I've ended up looking for over an hour at everything other than an answer to my problem. What a great site. My names Roger I have an 2004 f150 4.6 4x4.

I bought a brand new trailer and went to plug into the 4 pin trailer connector and none of the lights worked. We tried a 7 pin connector that had a 4 pin adapter and that didn't work either. I used 4 pin trailer tester with the lights on it and I had no power. I used my volt meter in both the 4 pin and 7 pin receptacles and had under 1 volt. I checked all the fuses in the fuse box that had anything to do with towing. Anyone got any ideas or know what might be wrong?

Thanks
Roger

Roger- make sure the trailer tow relay is installed. Sounds like your truck is missing. Can't recall the location from memory, but look at your owners manual and it'll show you.

x2. My relay was in my glovebox, in the same bag as the trailer brake controller wire harness.

It will go in the fuse box in the pass. floorboard.

The manual says there's two in the fuse box for towing . Both are installed. I've pulled a trailer a few times last year with no problems. Could one of these two relays be bad? Can I test it with a simple volt meter?
Thanks for the reply's I apreciate any help.

Also check your manual and look for any fuses under the hood..

This may sound a bit off but maybe checking the ground lead back on factory trailer wiring harness. It bolts up on the upper side of the tubular support in between the spare tire and the back side of the bumper- it should be a tapped hole. I'll try and locate/acquire a pic for you if necessary

I'm having the same problem that ws6gta had. What was the final resolution? I have towed in the past with no problems with the lights. Suddenly, nothing on the trailer works.
When I connect trailer to someone else's truck it works fine so I know it isn't the trailer wiring. All my fuses are good.

I'm anxious to hear if it was a relay or a ground. If so, which relay?

I found the problem on my trailer. The pigtail on the trailer got crimped and two wires shorted together blowing out all the bulbs on the trailer. I replaced the pigtail and bulbs and I'm good to go.

Fx4local3284 - there are specific fuses for left turn trailer ligts (as well as right turn trailer lights). Check your fuse.
