Hi... need help on identifying my truck VIN. Title shows it is a 1947 but the VIN# is not accurate. Vin number on the frame is *99T 47XXXX.
I am being told by some that it is a 1942. Sure gets confusing.
I thought that "99T" sounded familar, so I searched the forum and found an old post that someone had a "99T xxxxxxx" serial number on a '42 Firetruck...so you must have a large chassis truck then?
I looked through Mac Van Pelts site, but it didn't list numbers with a T...in fact I think his site only lists cars and commercial vehicles. could explain why larger chassis numbers aren't listed.
Thanks Mike.. I certainly appreciate the info. the truck is an old fire Truck, it was used in Tulsa and Spavinaw Oklahoma years ago. Since then, the fire equipment bed has been removed and it was used on a farm for several years. So, I am sure the title is incorrect as far as everything including the year and the Vin #. Title # is accurate though. All I have to do is take the title to the DMV and they will correct it for me. I have the truck listed on Ebay. It is under user mollyb22. :-)
You might have a look at it and see what you think.
I'd recommend not posting the entire vin of your vehicle on the internet. Not everyone out in cyberland is sincere about helping you.
To answer your question, it's not unusual to find titling errors with early cars and trucks. States still don't have uniform titling laws so imagine how chaotic things were 60 years ago before titles were really all that important. Every early vehicle has a unique story and there is an explaination for yours. You may never get to the bottom line.
Many states used to require that the owner posted their name and address on the side of their truck even if it was used just for farming. The reason for this was that information was so difficult to dig up with a simple licence plate number. This was all pre- information age.

You are correct about the titling problems. I have researched this for days and have finally discovered the following info:
It is a 1942 Ford 1-1/2 ton firetruck. The frame was built in 1938-39. It is a very large Frame. Then the body was added in the early part of 1942. I am familiar with the Ford Company's way of building things. :-). Although, I do have alot to learn. They would build the chassis and maybe not complete the vehicle for a year or more.
After all the research I have done, I find that only 999 trucks like this were made. I am just not sure it is in much demand even after that fact.
I am working with the DMV to get the proper title. They told me that back then during WWII that a lot of vehicles like this one were never even titled.
My husband restores For Model A's. He took this in on trade from a guy who wanted another car we had. I do have it listed on Ebay if you would like to see a picture of it. My seller name is mollyb22.

just a note, just because the vin is 1942 doesn't mean it wasn't originally sold as a 1947.
if it was originally sold by an aftermarket firetruck company it may have been sold as a 47. so even though the vin is incorrect the title may infact be correct.
Thank you very much Eric. I certainly appreciate the info. Now, I am really confused. :-). I do believe it is a 1942 truck. After lots of research, I find it can not be a 1947. I will certainly post any final and accurate info I find on this forum. Everyone has been terrific to help me.
Thanks Eric.. I appreciate all the help I can get. :-). After checking the 3 numbers on the frame..... it was made in 1938. That is not uncommon for the frames to be built earlier and then the truck completed at a later date.
Who knows? It could end up being a 1947. Ford just did not pay much attention to dates, numbers, etc back then. Especially after the war started. Anyway, I am still working on it. Thanks again
