Running a Diesel - Cost Justification

I just wanted to post this to all those people out there that are considering getting rid of their diesel truck and buying a gasser, because of the cheaper gas prices than a diesel. I spend no less than $600 dollars a month on fuel with the job that I have. I have considered getting rid of my truck and buying a gasser even though I love my truck. I have to have to have a truck with 4X4. Going with car is really not an option. These figure are for running 10,000 miles

GAS DIESEL
14mpg 17mpg
714.28 gallon used 588.28 gallons used
3.39 per gallon 4.00 per gallon

$2421.48 for gas trucks $2352.94 for a diesel

I will have to note that these are just averages and nothing says that they are the numbers that you should use to cost justify with. There are a lot of other things to consider too. I have decided for now that I am going to be keeping my diesel truck. I dont think that I will buy a beater car to drive around in either. After you consider the cost of the car, insurance for another vehicle, fuel, tags, oil, tires, brakes, and etc. I can buy a heck of alot more fuel for what it cost to get another vehicle. I hope this is just some food for thought. Have a great day.

With the fuel mileage mine attains diesel fuel will have to be nearly double the price of gasoline for me to be able to drive a gas truck with equal capabilities. But I am very close to having my 35 mpg Vdub on the road for the first time in years. I've spent way too much money on it already, but what is done is done. Plus it's so damn ugly it's cute. I needed a passenger side door for it when I bought it, having no idea there were 2 colors blue that year I just bought a blue door over the internet sight unseen and it does not match, but so what?

I wish I could get 17 m.p.g. out of my 7.3. It's like pulling teeth to get 13 m.p.g. out off mine.

I agree with Jaime. Considerings the fact that mine is paid for and really doesn't ask for anything more than diesel, I agree with Mark as well. Diesel would have to be nearly double the price of gas for me to even consider stepping down.

**Let's hope we don't jinx it**

I am in the same situation where I need A 4x4 pickup and also do about $1000 or 250 gal a month.I love my truck and am glad you posted this.It just confirms my beliefs that I am better off with what I have. Not to mention I herd a blurb on the radio today that gas prices are soon to be at $4 anyway.

Not to mention the cost of another vehicle, insurance, maint, tags, all this adds up to being not worth getting another.

Yeah, but if gas prices hit $4 a gallon, where does that put us? $5 a gallon? These prices are out of control.

I'm sure gas prices will continue to rise, but fuel prices seem to want to stay at .60 higher than gas
I still can't figure where it would be better for me to change to gas

I got my 7.3 for the sound and the fact that I wanted a diesel since I was a little kid. I'll be damned if fuel prices make me get rid of it. Its only going when it dies....and even then it'll probably get rebuilt

when mine dies, it will be replaced by another diesel. i got 19.1mpg using the 2 cycle on the last tank and it looks like I will get about the same this time. my buddy in his 150 can't get more than 14. i average 18mpg pretty consistently (w/o the 2 cy). i am just waiting on some more info to see if I should keep using it or not.

Around here diesel is on average 70-80 cents more a gallon where'as one year ago diesel was 70 cents less per gallon. That makes sense doesn't it???

What brand of 2 cycle are you using?
