Over cooling

Just bought a '97 aerostar with the 4.0 and 150,000 miles. CEL was on and had to change the rear O2 sensor and the EGR pressure sensor. It seems to run very cool. The fan (clutch type) never gets quiet. I think it is the thermostat. The one time it did come up to temp the fan got quieter. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Stuck fan clutch cause the same problem. Try to turn fan when engine is cold and when it is hot.

the Ford dash idiot gauge is totally inaccurate, only useful purpose is to warn of rapid overheating when needle buries on the right.

get a scan tool and put on OBDII EEC-V port. select ECT
should read 195d F and steady at operating temp

fan clutch should have slight rotational resistance cold and more when hot. no wobble in bearing. they usually only last 100k or so.
check belt for heat cracking and slippage. the water pump drives with the back slick side of belt.

thermostat needs to be changed every 4 years of 60k miles

Usually the thermostat goes bad. Two of my 96's had to have new thermo's cause of cold running. The fan won't cause cold running if its bad it will hurt fuel mileage though. If you don't get really hot output from the heater replace thermostat.

My engine temp gauge is pretty accurate. In the winter I know to turn the heat on right when the needle is on the line next to the "C". Works every time.

Gentlemen,

If it's overcooling, it is the thermostat.
