The Canister Purge Valve on my '92 302 is in front of the EGR to R of throttle body. Its a black plastic, cylindrical, solenoid operated, vacuum valve about the size of my thumb. I broke the hose thimbles off struggling to remove the EGR valve!

Your's should be easy to test for an open circuit. Not sure what V it operates on, may be reduced from the 'brain' so don't apply 12V to test until you know. Believe its designed to open for a short time after start up to vacuum out vapors trapped by the charcoal canister. Its easy to replace & not critical to running.
