I am thinking of rebuilding my 390 and i checked with adavance auto and i can get a complete 390 for $ 1428.00 just wondering what it would cost if i took it all the the machine shop and had them do it?

Well, it depends on what you get done with your motor and who does it. The cost will be cheaper thru Advance as they get the from a rebuilder that does thousands of motors in an assembly line type work so it's cheaper. My local guy couldn't touch that price as new pistons(even cheap ones), all the machine work, etc runs the cost up for him drastically.

Machine shop route will prolly be more than the auto parts price. An advantage of the machine shop route, among other things, is that you know the what the core components are going to be. An auto parts longblock, you may or may not know the exact parts used.
Personally, I want to know the condition of the heads. What cam is installed. I want to know the overbore, the crank specs. The piston & ring combo, etc. You won't get that from Advance Auto.
