All the things right with half tons, please, cracked tailgates, bad camshafts, transmission problems, excessive bed bounce. The only thing they got right was making a powerful truck.
Easy now. This is Toyota's first attempt at a full size truck. Sure they have some major first build issues but what's Ford's and Chevy's and Dodge's excuse?
They have been building trucks forever and they still haven't figured it out.
The next build Tundra will have most if not all of these issues ironed out. Hopefully the next build Tundra will be more in tuned with Toyota quality of the previous years.

Umm, this is Toyota's THIRD attempt. The T100 was first, first gen Tundra second and now this Tundra. They have had plenty of time.

The T100 was no full size truck. It was barely bigger than my 1991 Toyota Pickup.
The First gen Tundra was smaller than the current Ford and GM and Dodge full size 1/2 ton offerings.
Now the new Tundra is bigger and has leaped to the front albeit with some major first build issues.
I guess they have had plenty of time and that's maybe why they are in front now.
The future builds will only be better.

The T100 is definitely a full size truck. You can be a Toyota fanboy and it doesn't bother me but lets be honest at the same time. Toyota is not in front either. The last time I checked the F-series is still in front. Just because Toyota has a more powerful engine doesn't make them better or put them in front. A truck is not a race car and 0-60 is the only thing the Toyota wins at.
It's a very good quality made truck. But too costly IMO. One can't over look the facts though. Toyota MADE $11B last year. GM/Ford LOST about the same amounts.
True true. I kinda like the '09 Rams. I think the upper models are probably among the best looking trucks out there.
However, they suck for payload and towing. Ford will easily take the cake, once again, in all those departments. I wish Ford would keep the current styling though. It's still the best looking truck I've ever seen. I love the King Ranch SCREW in black with 4wd.

I'm not sure that your comment about Ford/Chevy/Dodge not having it figured out is accurate. At least for Ford, I think even though there are problems, from a statistical standpoint, the number of Major issues is very small. Remember, they sell millions of these trucks. I have had 3 F150's and 3 E150 vans since 1997 and have had zero problems, other than minor ones, and my vans all go 200,000 miles or more before I sell them. And 3 of my neighbors have F150's, with no problems either.
Of course on the internet, all you see are the problems, nobody ever complains that my truck never breaks down. And as far as Toyota, I don't really know how many of the problems we read about are widespread, but I do know this. Toyota is gonna find out the hard way all the problems that come along with trying to be the biggest and making a full line of vehicles. Ford learned, and is now concentrating on quality and making the business profitable.
And one other thing, unless there is a trim I have not seen yet, the new Tundra leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to interior design and materials. I have seen a few and all I can think of is 1989 Camry. I'll take my FX4 anyday!

I agree with the Tundra has some major issues. I wanted one but there is no way I want this build model with all the issues and the corners they cut on it. Toyota is finding out that trying to be the biggest along with the best has hurt their quality.
The new Tundra is nowhere near the level of quality of my older 1991 pick up except for the fact that it's much newer.
My truck is built much better overall. I have over 195,000 on it and it's still going strong.
The reason I own Toyota's was because Ford pushed me to them.
I was a Ford Guy and owned three brand new Ford trucks 1983,1985,1987) and they were the worst vehicles I ever owned. They were in the shop way too much.
Granted most of the problems were taken care of under warranty but I spent way too much time at service.
My last 1987 F150 XLT Lariat was the worst of all. At 37,000 Miles the front end went out. Ford wanted $2000.00 to repair the worn out front end.
I had a friend buy better aftermarket parts with zirc fittings so it wouldn't happen again. It cost me over a grand.
The guages had a mind of their own and I could never tell how much gas I had in the truck(Both tanks)
I had the oil light come on. I checked the oil, all was fine and the engine sounded right. I called and drove it to the dealer. They told me it was the sending unit and they would order the part and replace once it came in.
I said " are you sure" They said no problem, drive it and we'll call you when it comes in.
I drove off the lot and got halfway home and the truck starts smoking, stalls and wont turn over.
After they towed it I waited 10 days and they call and tell me it was the inertia switch under the dash. Sure it was. it took them 10 days to find a tripped switc. Is there even an inertia switch?
I'm pretty sure they rebuilt my engine as it never ran or sounded the same after that.
Fast forward to just over 60,000 miles and right out of warranty.
The Tranny starts slipping really bad. Ford looks at it and says 2800.00 for a new tranny.
I had an independant shop look at it and they said new 2600.00 or bebuild it for 2200.00.
I drove that POS right to the Toyota dealer in 1991 and said what will you give me for this? I Traded it in for my current truck.
I've been a Toyota man ever since and so has my family.
Now I'm willing to look at the new Ford F150 even though deep down I know I shouldn't. If I were to buy another Ford and it turned out like my last three.................
That's why I said I'm willing to look at the new Ford F150 especially after people say they are better and they are said to be more dependable now. All I know is I'm going to look at them and I want to drive one as soon as they come out.
I'm leaning towards the new F150 because they are the only ones who build a Crew Cab with a 6.5' bed that I like.(Not interested in a Dodge)GM and Toyota does not buils the CC with a 6.5' bed.
If my Fords in the past were good solid trucks I'd still be driving them, I'm sure of that. They had nice power and room and the ride was nice but they were flat out undependable.
You can only take so much poor quality before you have to make a change.
It sounds like you've just got some lemons. I've got a friend that's got a 88 F150 bought new and now has 280K on it. Not problems and he still uses it to tow his camper. My cousin has a 87 F150 with 150K on it and hasn't had any problems. That said though, the 80's were some of the worst years for American manufactureres and lot of people have a bad taste of them from that.

Ahhh.....1987.....brings back memories of my 87 Bronco, I loved that truck, great off road, manuvering the woods, something my huge 06 F150 could never do. Too bad, like you said, the 80's were crap and that thing rusted out. (As did my 1983 Bronco, but my 1995 was OK when I traded it for the 1997 F150...I miss that truck also, 4.6 4-speed manual, actually ran quite good) Obviously I love Ford trucks. I have owned many brand cars including 2 Mustang Gts, but Ford is the only truck I will ever own, unless they quit making them. And by the way, the worst quality cars I owned were BMW and VW, and the funny thing is, the only car to ever break down and leave me stranded was a 1992 Honda Accord, but it was a good overall car.
It's nice to see Ford making such strides in quality, so I sure that my next car purchase will be a Ford or Lincoln (I would LOVE to see Ford make an AWD Fusion with the Ecoboost twin turbo making about 350 HP... we can dream right??).
