Love my 4.6

This morning i had to put the truck to work in removing a tree that blew over early in the week. Tree was about 1/4 way down a hill. It was cut into three sections with limbs removed from the main trunk to. Estimated height of the tree is about 30ft. I'll say I'm pretty proud of what my 4.6 can still do at 215,200 miles. Dropped her into 4L and started pulling sections of the tree up the hill. All this was done with the truck in my signature. Truck never skipped a beat while pulling.

Here's a pic of the mess after moving everything. That's my dad in the pic.

Thumbs up

Thats putting the truck to work. Those trunks are heavy. I hope mine can still do that at 215k.

Yeah they were quite heavy, and having to pull them about 35-40ft up a hill doesn't make things any easier.

4.6s are nice, but once you've had a 5.4L youd never want to go back to a 4.6L...

I didn't know they had hills that tall in MN - I thought they only had lakes

My grandpa lived to be 98 and was in great shape until 96. I was always glad to know that living long ran in my family - gives me some confidence. Same thing when I see 215k on your truck - good to know there is longevity in the Ford family too!

Not necessarily so. My 08 E250 Super Duty has a 5.4L/3.55. My old 05 E250 w/185K was 4.6L/4.10 ........ I believe it pulled at least as good as the 5.4L, and got 2+ mpg better on the highway! Should have stuck with a sure thing and not went for the "big" motor.

Ive never seen a 4.6L that got better milage than a 5.4L. The 4.6L has to work harder to do the same amount of work, so even though its a smaller engine, it doesnt get any better fuel economy.
Id never trade my 5.4L for a 4.6L. Theres no replacement for displacement.

Exactly, ask the guys with 6.4 powerstroke!

CumminsvsPowerStrokevsDuramaxHP/TorqueCurves-TDRRoundtable

With that said, I love my 4.6 and it has never let me down hauling anything or getting out of hairy situations. I guess you dont miss what you dont have!! I probably would be happy with a trusty 4.2 as well.

Had my '08 came with the 4.10 gears that might have been so. Gearing is a great equalizer. I put a thousand miles a week on my van, two and a half days actually, so believe me I KNOW what mileage it gets! I subscribed to the same theory as you which is why I got the 5.4L this time. Three years and I'll be back in a 4.6L/4.10 one.

Here you are, now you HAVE seen one.

EPA is even funnier about MPG ratings for these '08 pickups.

The 2WD version w/4.6 achieves 1-2 MPG more than the the 5.4 & IMO most 4.6 owners should expect to see that-just 1-2 MPG over the bigger engine. What's odd is that EPA concluded the 4WD version of 5.4 gets the same MPG as the 2WD-which I suspect defies what most owners would've expected. Odder still is the 4WD versions w/both 4.6 & 5.4 have the same MPG.

After nearly 8 months w/my minty '98 XLT 4.6 the experience leaves me underwelmed. There's been no situation where substituting a 5.4 would alter this. The pickup lay out is disappointing & I haven't learned to "Love" it much at all. Another Club Wagon is needed. I ran the 1st ads to sell the F150 just after it turned 12,000 miles. Hope somebody "Loves my 4.6" a lot more than me. For me the pickup proved to be an impractical 14 MPG Gas Guzzling dinosaur. Still hate the rear vision b/c of cap, but need the cap. If not b/c of 4WD, there's no task the F150 has done that an E150 couldn't have done better & at the same MPG, IMHO.

My next truck is most likely going to be a regular cab 4x2 with a 4.2L in it. Im sure I will miss the power of the 5.4L, but the V6 will still get the job done and I wont have to worry about the sparkplugs either shooting out of the heads or stripping the plugs when I change them.
Sorry boys, I dont believe there is a fuel economy difference from a 4.6L to a 5.4L. Lets just say this aint my first rodeo...

It's a free country ,my man, believe as you wish. Let's just say that I've been to a few more rodeos in my 53 years than you in your 27. Cheers!

No...but you will have to worry about the head gasket popping...
