Just tried to get it ready for spring and the starter all of a sudden isn't catching. It is the original starter on the original 239in flathead. Any quick fixes out there? Why would this just suddenly happen?
What Ross said. I had the spring snap, it's not very hard. If you've never taken your starter out be careful. First remove the battery cable (of course) Then remove the small bracket that bolted from the top bolt of the starter and the oil pan but don't pull the starter bolt completely out. loosen the bottom bolt and try to remove the starter as one piece. There is nothing holding the starter together and it will fall apart in a few pieces, pulling the amature out of the brushes which can be a pain to get back in.

After some minor health issues I'm back at it again! Took out the starter (thanks for the heads up bobj49f2, I'd forgotten that trick). Found the problem, now I just need a solution.
On the shaft and pinion assembly the bolt ("SCREW-11382" on page 269 for those of you out there with a 49-51 shop manual) sheared. I need a new bolt and one of those lock washers with 2 tangs on it that get bent, one down and one up once the bolt is tightened to keep things cozy. The front bolt on the starter driver head ("SCREW-11377) appears to be identical.
Anybody know where I can get one of these bolts and washers? Anybody have an old original 6 volt starter laying around that they would be willing to send the bolts off of?
