E4OD to c-6 swap?

my POS 90 f-350 i bought is pissing me off. i'm looking into a 89 f-250 donor truck with a 7.3 c-6 with only 90 k miles. i should be able to take every thing out of the 89 with the c-6 and put it into the 90 with out to much trouble? i may just pull both drivelines and put the low mileage 7.3 with the c-6 and stick it in the 90 f350. will this be a strait across swap going from e4od to c-6? thanks, pete

In theory, yes, but I can't help but wonder how much it would cost to fix your E4OD and compare that to the cost of getting a donor truck and all the work of swapping everything over. I've had both transmissions behind the same engine, and I would never go back to a C6. Its a good transmission, but it needs an extra gear and a lower ratio 1st geat.

Are both trucks the same drivetrain configuration and the same wheelbase?

i don't need over drive. i plow snow with the truck and pull a car trailer local, and haul my mowers around. i don't need overdrive, and the c-6 has proven to be alot more reliable. besides the truck with the e4od has a rusted threw oil pan that leaks like the exxon valdez, and i believe the torque converter may be smoked as it hasn't ever locked up since i've owned it. the donor truck in question is a 89 f-250 reg. cab, and my truck i already have is a late 1990 f-350 regular cab. oil pan and torque converter i might as well pull the whole deal,eh? let me you your take on it? thanks, pete

If both trucks have the same wheelbase and are both 2wd (or both 4wd), than it should be a strait across swap, driveshaft(s) and all. If you don't drive on highway speeds, than I guess you will be happy with a C6. Replacing your E4OD with a rebuilt would probably be the easiest, but you will be looking at anywhere from $1500 to $3500 and up for a bulletproof setup.

Asside from the TC never locking up was there anything else wrong with the tranny? 1990 is not the best year for the E4OD. If its a factory build, you could be on borrowed time.

it 's very inconsistent. sometimes it goes right into gear sometimes it hesitates. last time i drove it it took 20-30 minutes of driving before it would go into third gear. i'm gonna push snow with it and the e4od won't hold up any how. i have a transmission shop that will do a quality overhaul and some of the simple upgrades for $600 plus $350 for a entry level billet converter. $250 labor if he pulls it and puts it back in. so for $1200 i'll have a stout E4OD that a 7.3 N/A will never be able to tear up plus a billet converter. at the same time it'll cost $180 more plus some labor to replace the rusted oilpan while the trans is it. well if i can get the whole donor truck lets say for $1000-$1500 i pull the driveline regasket it have the c-6 rebuilt for $275 ( a friend of mine works at a tranny shop and would do it over a weekend at home) plus have a 85000 mile 7.3 not to mention a complete truck still to sell parts off of or keep around for stuff that i need off of it. after all radiators are around $300,fuel tanks, etc.etc that's where i'm at with it. later, pete

Your call, either way you would get some piece of mind with a fresh tranny in there.

I'm new here but i think i can add a bit of insight as i went through the same type of struggle a year and a half ago. e40d blew (2nd time in a year) the trans shop screwed me. i quickly looked for a c6 for mine but really couldnt find one that was any good. i ended up getting it rebuilt, again, this time at a good shop. it costed me 4000 but it was the best 4000 i ever spent. its an butt kicker now, it has a 4R100 tugger 2 shift kit and an expensive torque converter...1000 for it, but boy does it ever work good now. Ats actually sells basically the same E4OD as what i got for about the same $$. The shop also rerouted how it oils in O/D apparently it was a problem for it. thats all don't discount the strenght of the E4OD.

$4000 for a trans rebuild?? holy crap. the shop that would do mine if i go that route. quoted me $600 and that's drilling out passages for better oiling, recalibrating the valve body and extra clutches. he knows the weaknesses of the E4OD the rebuild kit is only like $180-$230 the rest is bench time for the actual trans overhaul. he said it'd be stupid not to do all the upgrades while it's apart. he said when it's done i'd never be able hurt it unless it was improperly abused. he did my my cousins 96 power stroke E4od a few years ago and it's been flawless, i just used it to pull a load from new york that was around 15,000 lbs. worked sweet. my cousin opted and got the better billet converter for $600. i believe $4000 is high for a trans rebuild unless they were doing billet input/output shafts , different planetaries and stuff like that.which isn't necessary til over 350-400 h.p. 600-650 torque from what i've seen. a good rebuild with improved oiling extra clutches recalibrated valve body, and a billet converter and a big trans cooler will last quite a a long time behind a 7.3 idi turbo that's "tweaked". any how thanks for the input guys i'll tune back in if i get my self into a "big project". later, pete

yeah they did the planetaries, and everything, case etc... it was a complete melted down pile of garbage that had to be rebuilt. btw i am canadian so we get hammered on pricing a bit too but the shift kit was 1199.99 just itself. and the torque, that was them doing the R/R.

$1200 for a shift kit??? what did it come with?

I go a shift kit from Lordco for $40 (mild price beak since I had an account, but not enough to make that difference).

I got a good tri-clutch billet converter for $730 with tax in victoria BC.

Lots of part suppliers are on Ebay that sell thinks like steel planetaries, and the price is quite good all things considering. $200 gets you a 6 pinion steel forward planetary, and a 4 pinion steel overdrive with imput shaft. The steel reverse planetary kit is still a little steeper.

there really is no need for a steel rear planetary , it is a wise upgrade for the front planet when towing

That was my conclusion too. I left the 4 pinion aluminum planetary in there and just replaced the OD and forward planetaries. They have since started to sell just the planetary for the reverse instead of strictly the whole kit, but like you said, its not really needed (considering how little it gets used normally).

Be careful the E4OD flex plate is different from the C-6 as it has no hole in the plate to allow for the front drain plug on a C-6 torque converter. The drain plug will stick out just enough to slightly warp the plate. E4OD converters have their drain plugs on the circumference. Just drill a nice clean hole to allow for a socket to slide through for draining. I have 50,000 trouble free miles on my plow truck with that same set up.

Also E4OD transmissions are longer so while your transfer case will bolt up no problem your rear drive shaft will be about 3 inches to short and your front drive shaft will be 3 inches to long. Been there done that! LOL But to plow snow C-6 hands down just keep her cool! No offense to gear jammers but I have done enough plowing with manual transmissions to drag my HULK left leg to bed after a long day
