plugs

Man it took a few tries to join this site.
Hi I just bought a 06 4x4 w a 5.4L it has 23,000 miles on it.
I have been reading about changing plugs on this board.
How often should they be changed? Will it get better milage?
Think I would go w the 1 piece Champs if they like to break off?

thanks

I have almost the same truck and I will be changing mine out around 25k. Got lucky and got a set of 8 Champion 7989 for about $7 each on a pricing error. I've done a lot of reading on the plug issue and those that have changed them before 30k have had nearly zero stick or break. After that the chances of having problems increase greatly. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Welcome to FTE. I purchased my truck used with about 35,000 and learned about the plug issue at about 45,000. I immediately followed the TSB procedure and was one of the lucky ones - no plugs came apart in the head. There was no option of a one piece plug then, so I went back with the OEM plug with nickel anti-sieze. If I were doing it today I would go with the one piece plug. For me, any difference in mileage is vastly out weighted by the possible cost of broken plug repair. Good Luck! Russ

Yes....champion now makes a plug that is one piece, thereby eliminating the chance of it breaking off....

I don't think so..... Motorcraft are MULTI-PIECE plugs, and the Champion is the one piece plug. Russ
