2008 6.4 mpg improvements

Have 13000 miles on my new 08 6.4 and currently getting between 13 city to about 19 hwy running empty. Has any one used aftermarket air filters, chips, etc. to improve milage and do they really help much? Do I need to get more milage on this engine to really tell true mph? Thanks.

you have enough miles on it where you could consider aftermarket products. but you mpg sounds better than most. you could look into spartan and innovative diesel. theres a guy on ford-trucks.com selling his badp tuner with dpf delete for 700. his names pahrump, he's also on the diesel garage. intake wont gain much besides setting a check engine light.. my dealer cleared mine but it came back on the same day. but i like the way it sounds and performs. hope this helps

Yep, I was getting 23 mpg in my dually yesterday. DPF delete is the only way to go when you want big MPG gains.

13K...How many miles should a 6.4 have on it before you loose the "green piece" and reprogram??? I've got 6500, I am ready to do it now.

I used AMSOIL at my first oil change, and have had no problems. I also saw a slight (.5 to 1 mpg) improvement with it.

Wow, that is fantastic fuel economy.
And from a dually even better.
You must be able to go a long ways on a tank of diesel.

Firstly applogies for being so dumb, but what is dpf.
Secondly "it sounds to good to be true" if removing this thingy gets such a huge mpg improvement, why is it there in the first place, what's the downside.
Can I get in on this trick with my 2004 E450 RV powerstroke getting 10-11mpg?

Not much change here

I'm sitting on 14k miles right now. My mileage hasn't changed much from 4000 miles

I use Mobil DELVAC 1 in my 6.4. I to had a .5 mph increse, when I switched. If you do the math you will see that switching to synthetic oil you will save $130 every 10000 miles if you are geting 12 mpg. FREE oil and better procetion too. What a deal.

The DPF is a Diesel Particulate Filter; it's the reason the new diesels do not blow any smoke. It's required for all new diesels by the EPA, which is a bunch of BS because it killed the mileage on these trucks. It's a filter on the exhaust system that collects 99% of the soot made by the motor, once it's full the truck will then enter a regeneration cycle which means more fuel is pumped into the motor to create enough heat in the exhaust to burn off the soot collected. Regeneration EGT's at idle will exceed 1200*F.

Now removing the DPF does 2 things. It's reduces the back pressure to 1/100th the pressure it was previously with the DPF, and it removes the regeneration cycle. Both save fuel and the end result is good mileage gains.

I've always gotten exceptional mileage in my truck, mainly because I ordered my truck specifically for towing and mileage. I've got the weight capacity of a 1-ton dually, with the fuel efficiency of a manual with 3.73 rear gears. But overall with the DPF delete I got 15%-20% better fuel mileage than before. And next week when I put on a 5" complete turbo back system I expect the numbers to go up even more.

dpf question answered

Thanks SouthTexasDiesel for explaining the dpf for me.
It sounds logical to me, but if I understand correctly taking the dpf out makes the truck a polluter again (Personal choice).
I assume it has to go back in for the emmissions test.
It creates 100X more back pressure !! This sounds like an ideal opportunity for a better aftermarket filter sytem to be developed?

Thanks, that was a good reply. Unfortunately, most of us out there are not diesel mechanics. How diffucult is it to do the DPF delete, and do you need a programmer to do it?
