If the new diesel pans out without all the powerstroke'esque problems I'll look at them in 2011, if not I'll probably get a reman 5.4 for my current truck and call it done.
i wouldn't be afraid. Ford has had some very success and trouble free launches over the last few years. My wife owns an 07 Edge , not only has it been trouble free, but hands down is the finest auto we have ever owned.

This isn't your father in law's Buick. Step back
and no one gets hurt!
I'll get one with the diesel as soon as they ship one to my local dealer. Even if there are some first year bugs.....the warrenty will cover it. You know there will be some service bullitins.

After dealing with my 04, I don't recommend buying a ford first model year anything, especially the f150. Ford was doing much better in quality in the mid to late 1990's as well. What did they do, throw away the quality gains as soon as they needed the company financials to look better. These quality initiatives won't last. The trick will be buying something when quality is still important to them.
I think customer satisfaction is a high priority now. And it shows, look at the Ford Focus and Fusion. Very high in customer satisfaction and this is the first year for the Focus redesign.

Ford has improved in initial quality ratings but they still have a ways to go in long term satisfaction. Fords claim that they now are of the same quality as Toyota is a bit far fetched. They have improved but they are not in Toyota's class just yet.
I'd get one with no problem except that there are 2 new engines coming out later on that have my interest. My loving bride gave me the green light in 2010 when the Expy is paid off. By then I may ACT like I wear the pants in the family and get a 2010 SD.

I'm not worried about a Ford in it's first year. I have had a couple first years Ford models without any problems for the life of the car. That being about 200K each. I am not saying things didn't wear out, they did. But first year problems no. I did buy a 1973 Chevy C10 Cheyenne Super with a 454. The engine was a pain, and broke several times in the first 5K miles. So I unloaded that beast. But Ford? Never. And the Chevy didn't have a first year engine either. It was just a high output POS underperformer.
My advice to anyone. If you like the 09 Ford pickup. Buy it. I don't think you will be sorry.

Everybody, my self included, said the same thing about the 05 Super Duty with the 6.0L diesel in it. "No way Ford will mess this one up. It's too important a product! It's their bread and butter!" They almost lost their shirt on it.
I always prefer to wait until the Job #2 trucks hits the lots.
A lot is learned by Ford during the first runs of trucks. Most of it, how not to do something or how to do something better. First run or Job #1 trucks are the learning curve trucks. The usually have a bit more content in them though. Later run trucks get de-contented (little stuff removed...lights here and there, hood blankets, etc.). I've found that the third year of trucks always seems to be the best year. Good content, build quality, option packages sorted out etc. etc.
