Dan, I just have a 20 year old memory of forgetting a short hill with a stoplight at the bottom and knocking the speed off soon enough in Willard with stock drum brakes. When I realized my error, I had to really stand on the brakes. As I was entering the red stop light/busy secondary road brakes were fading badly. I was standing on them and debating bailing out of the drivers door. I finally came to a stop !/4 of the way thru the intersection. Dry mouth and wet backside time!
Having said all that do you think that the steel 4 wheel flatbead trailer with at least 1000# of sandblast sand pushing from behind was a part of the problem? Oh, yes the electric trailer brakes failed to lock up. Willard now sports a Jag IFS with big disks and the larger F100 rear drums on a 9 inch.

The problem wasn't with the brakes in your scenario. If you would have driven it off a cliff the brakes wouldn't have stopped you either (tee hee hint hint)
I'm putting discs on my 51 at the moment in conjunction with the Mustang II upgrade....but not because the originals of either were unreliable or unsafe.
I'll open a different thread on the brakes it ought to be fun. I haven't been beaten up in a long time.
PS Pump twice - then stand on them!

49Willard,
I had a similar experience with disc brakes. Years ago I was using my 1983 F-150 to flat tow a 1942 American La France firetruck with a tow bar (I know, I know...smart move huh) Anyway, I had the big old firetruck push my little half ton completely through a red light. Let me tell you there was definatley some butt nuggets in my pants after that one
Its amazing what you try when you are a teenager.....lol

These stories just bust me up. A FIRE TRUCK Bobby?!? ( )
You could have dropped the anchor off an aircraft carrier out the back at that point and it probably wouldn't have stopped ya.
Has anyone rear ended a cop and tried to tell him it was because of your brakes? (It doesn't help - trust me)

lol I'm with you mph, I'm running a BBC 454 in my 50 f1. I love the look of this old truck but as for going all out (ford) sorry in out too. I like to build big power and 5 bolts around my pistons just seems better then 4. As for your chop top man I'm all over that, i would love to see some pics when you are done. I just started my chop two nights ago, and almost have it done. So any way its all about what you need to be happy with it, and how you wish for your truck to turn out.
Ps: guys i like ford motors too, i tryed to do a 429 build, but parts where hard to find at a good $. we all know Chevy parts are a dime a dozen. if you have not got a radiator yet try this radiator link.

anarki,
thats a great radiator link. When I was searching for a radiator to use I spent alot of time searching through that catalog. It will show you all the dimensions for the radiator including, inlets, outlets, mounting flanges, etc. I basically searched for something to fit my dimensions, when I found out what kind of car it came in I then went to my local parts house and picked one up.
This may be of some use as well;
Napa carries rubber hose reducer bushings. Here are the P/N's;
NBH-900 from hose 1.5 to 1.25
NBH-901 from hose 1.75 to 1.5
NBH-902 from hose 2.0 to 1.75
NBH-903 from hose 2.25 to 2.0
NBH-904 from hose 2.5 to 2.25
NBH-905 from hose 3.0 to 2.5

Hey there MPH and anarki, its nice to see other Darksiders joining the site. Don't let Dick's comments put you outta sorts, I think there a few guys on here that just try and Razz us up a little while we are new to the site and see if our skin is thick enough to be able to stick around. I too was having a radiator quandary and was wondering if I would go with an old dodge rad or buy a shiny new aluminum one. Sandidandie - nailed it one the head with the reasoning as to why I am not going with aluminum....simply for the amount of use I will get outta the truck, it would likely be toast in a few years.
Give this site a try. Quanta Products
I took my old stock rad (from a flat head V8) in and its being pressure tested and if all is good he'll modify it to accept the SBC rad hose location and diameter (I'll report back on the pricing once he gives me a cost estimate). Should provide adequate cooling since I'm not going for huge HP and I will add a trans cooler on the front of that as well......
Dick, will a Ford trans cooler fit the return lines from a TH-400 transmission......LOL

Ditto everything Randy said. I have Alum for looks only, but higher maint.
Bobby, Well said man. But stop admitting about the Toilet seat parts, Shhhh!!
MPH; I would go brass. And as a side note, Without data, it's just an opinion. I look in galleries to see who actually is accomplishing something before taking them serious.
AND, you have a PM.

For what it's worth, my last F1 had a SBC. It was a long time ago but as I recall, I had a '69 Chevy Caprice Radiator that fit very nicely in the stock location. It had real nice side mount brackets and the top was low and easy to see and reach over. I think I had to trim 1/4" from each side bracket with a tin-snips to make it fit. I checked Napa and it's #NR32488.
Don't take my word for without double-checking the dimensions but if I'm right, I had 8 trouble-free daily driving years with that set-up.

I found a nice one for 260.00 with a trans cooler in it fro a speed shop I have been dealing with since I was in the 11th grade (many years back). It is the same one Speedway sells. I got it on the ground today 6" in front and 7.5" in the back without the engine in it.
Thank you for the support and help, Mike

LOL.....
I had forgot about that pic. I guess for the sake of the new guys I should clarify things.
I used part of the hinge of a toilet seat as anchor points for the tailgate straps on my truck. The only mistake I made was to tell anyone about it....LOL
Its all good. I don't mind being poked with a stick now and again, Lord knows, I do my share of poking.................
(the guys in the pics is still going to have a heck of a mess to clean up if he don't drop his drawers)
