used oil for fuel

Over the years from mine and dads grading co. we have saved up 1200 gallons of used engine, trans, gear, and hyd oil. I have enough parts to make pumping and filtering system, using 3 filters first a 25 micron then 10 micron and then a 3 micron then across a magnet.

mixing this oil 50/50 with diesel i'm thinking of running it in my idi
I think it should be clean enough to keep from screwin' up injectors or ip
any thoughts.

I'd do it. At $4 a gallon for diesel, even if you only burned 100 gallons before it toasted your pump, you'd still break even! Naturally you're going to be able to burn a LOT more of it than that before you hurt anything - probably never hurt it at all if you filter it down to 3 microns. 1200 gallons at $4 per gallon savings is nearly 5 grand! If I had that kind of supply, I'd filter the heck out of it and burn it in a heartbeat.

Just curious -- is there any chance that there is some off-road diesel in the mix? It'd be a shame if you got "dipped" and it came up red...

Are any of the oils synthetic? I know we had to stop running the heaters at work off waste oil because the synthetic wont burn very well. If not you'll be fine.

am I just missing something when you drop your oil out of your engine is it not already filtered. Or is that not adequate enough to burn in your tank. Im new at these diesel technology bear with me please.

could a person make up his own filtering device? thanx

The oil in the pan is not filtered the oil circulates from the pan to the filter the gose threw the rest of the engine cleaning any gunk or deposits and flushing them to the oil pan.

What he said...

PLUS the oil filter only takes out particles bigger than either 10 or 20 microns but your fuel filter takes out anything over 5 microns as I recall (can't remember the exact specs on the two, but someone will probably chime in with that info).

You need to filter it a lot better to use as fuel than what you need to do for lubrication.

How much ATF do you guys think it would take to make highway diesel look like off road fule? I have about a litle over 3/4 a tank in my big tank/anything my truck will run off tank and about 2 galons of ATF. Normaly i wouldn't worry about it but I may be going out of town this weekend and don't know what to expect as too tank checks.

No synthetic oil.
Yeah some off-road from where I change fuel filters and dump the fuel out of of the old filter. but not much

filter micron ratings:
6.9l- 6 microns
7.3l- 12 microns

The thing is making the filter system is the trick since i have all these extra parts laying around

Which filter - oil or fuel? I'm thinking fuel, because the specs I've seen show the PSD filter removing particles half the size of the one for the IDI...

I filter my used oil with used Fleetgard fs1000 filters rated at 10 microns that I bring home from work after services. I then mix 50% off road fuel/stove oil/what ever is cheep at the time 40% used motor oil 10% used transmission fluid to keep things clean and also to say I am running used transmission fluid if I get stopped. That way I don't feel so bad,It's kinda like a little white lie

I did this for a few years on my last truck with no problems other then a plugged filter once. O also a few times I got the fuel kinda thick so the motor would chug-chug-chug then I would just switch tanks quick then stopped by and add some more diesel.

Also a pointer to anyone thats going to do this run the used waste oil/mix in your rear tank so if you do boo boo the motor picks up good fuel from the front tank faster. I also convert the truck over to a more common filter head from Cummins that takes and 1" 14 thread filter like the ff105/fs212 or even the fs1000 they are all 10 micron and the ff105 if you have to get it new is cheeper then the stock 7.3l filter.

If you told them you were running used transmission fluid here, they would hand you a ticket for 5000 dollars plus court costs.

Why? As long as you own at least one vehicle with a slush-box soy you can at least say that it is used oil from your own tranny. If it is ATF that you bought and paid retail for, you've already paid all the taxes on it, right?
