engine swap, probably asked before but I can't find it
I have a 94 E-350 Box van with a 460 EFI. There is a guy close to me who has a 460 carb from a 1975 truck. Will the 1975 accept the intake system along with everything else so I can use this engine in my van? I am changing motors because the 94 engine has a bad knock that sounds like it is coming ffrom the lower end.
No. The EFI heads and intake are different. You need to either swap the heads and intake from the old motor or get a carb adapter plate to go on the EFI intake.
OK, someone told me today that they did not think I can use the 93/94 EFI stuff on the 75 block. He also said that even if it does fit, the motor would shake the van to pieces because of balancer is different. Is he right? I really don't understand what he said about that though. Seems to me it wouldn't matter....the balancer is for the engine it's connected to, right? I was just hoping to get the 75 460 motor and bolt on my 94 EFI stuff and go.
What the hell would the heads and intake have to do with engine balance? Nothing, that's what. He's full of bad info. Even if the balancer is different just use the appropriate flex plate or flywheel, problem solved.
The rotating assembly has to be balanced which means the crank has to use the correct flexplate/flywheel for that crank. Don't go mixing early and late parts as there are internally balanced 460s (prior to 1979 and externally balanced 460s (1979 and on).
Chances are good that the flex plates are different because the '75 probably had a C-6 behind it whereas the '94 ran the E4OD transmission. A direct comparison of the two flex plates will solve this problem.
That said, I doubt the ring gear and starter would be compatible altho both are supposed to have a ten tooth count.
