some questions: hypothetical

Ok, what I am looking for are symptoms of each of these scenarios

Thanks

Glow Plug relay is bad- (what will happen)

Glow plug(s) bad -( what will happen)

EBPV stuck closed- (what will happen)

Reason I ask is I am trying to narrow down what (might) be affecting my truck.

It starts fine, but (to me) seems sluggish, not really a rough idle, but I depress the accelerator, in neutral...and it seems like the engine lacks power

I engage the gears (manual Trans) and it accelerates normal somewhat but is still sluggish, after I hit third gear it kinda opens up and accelerates like a bat outa hades?

What might be my prob?

I have changed the oil, I disconnected the EBPV and still this occurs, wondering what else I might be able to do?

Thanks for your help sorry this is long winded, just can't figure it out.

Update Took a look at my ICP, that thing looked brand new!

Fuel filter is new, but the bowl, again looked brand new, fuel heater is working too.

when all are awake I will crank her up with ICP off just to see.

I am thinking my ebpv might stuck shut.

help here please opinions welcome.

I titled my post wrong I meant what occurs with each one of the items I inquired about, oh well long day.

looking forward to those replies.

Very hard or impossible to start when cold

Glow plug(s) bad -( what will happen)
Same as above, 1-2 bad GP's = long crank times, run like crap until those cylinders warm up (1-2 minutes). 3 or more bad GP's it may not start when the temps are near zero F

EBPV stuck closed- (what will happen)
No effect on starting (Normally closed during cold starts) but have no power. Most here disconnect it.

Load test the batteries, clean all the battery/starter connections. The engine doesn't make a lot of boost in neutral but it should rev to redline pretty quickly.

Also look for boost and/or exhaust leaks

This will help determine if the EBPV is stuck shut.

The four (4) things I have done to get rid of that sluggish thing ... on my truck

1. disconnected the EBPV
2. new fuel pump (leaking) then FPR bb mod (low fuel pressure)
3. 6637 air filter
4. new map sensor hose (clogged) .. map sensor seeing boost now

ok I think it might be the ebpv, it is stuck even when plugged in, lever never moved to open engine was idling for at least ten to fifteen minutes, even depressing accelerator didn't make it come open,

I know there won't be power in neutral but if you press the accelerator in neutral it hardly wants to go past 2000 rpms, not bogging, then again it could be, just not wanting to open up (at least the best way I describe it).

where in the world is the map sensor? so I can check it too.

the icp is fine, I guess... truck still ran about the same.

oh god, it is eating me alive trying to figure this out, how do yal keep your wits when this stuff happens?

Don't panic..we will get you going. When crap happens...we come here and get help and moral support. You came to the right place.

You can wire the EBPV open for starters.

The MAP is on the firewall above the HVAC box (heater/AC). It has a small (1/4 inch) rubber line going to the intake and has an electrical connector too. The rubber line is known to plug up or crack...just replace it.

Look for boost leaks at all the joints from the turbo to the intake manifolds bolted to the heads. It's best to do this with the serpentine belt removed so the fan doesn't push air all over the engine compartment. Get a spray bottle with soapy water, spray the connections while someone stands on the throttle, wide open, while you look for bubbles.

Look for exhaust leaks too...from the exhaust manifolds to the turbo. Soot is a real good indication.

Thanks alot

OK breakdown so far,

Got the ebpv unstuck it is unplugged at the wire connector now, will not exactly stay all the way open but is opening (a little easier) I mean very little.....

the bogging down has not all the way gone, but it HAS improved..

could it be the cat clogged?

How do I wire that bad boy (EBPV) open?- Pics anyone?

Map sensor "appears to be ok" hose is fine with no cracks or clogs

I think the wiring harness that plugs into the valve covers is called the uvc? is that right? those look very clean inside and all prongs to have good connection

I checked the icp it was clean inside too, think I said that already.

I am leaning toward FPR and/or cat clogged.

Fuel filter is new and the bowl is spotles

what might I be missing now?

I am kind of afraid to tackle cleaning the fpr ....does the bowl need to be drained before i do that?

by the way no leaks, and no soot

FPR screen cleaning:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...een-clean.html

The picture posted above should tell you how to wire the EBPV open.

I doublt the cat is plugged but you never know. One way to tell is with a heat gun, the entrance of the cat will be much hotter than the exit.

Are you getting any smoke out of the tail pipe going down the road? Color? Amount?

Check your fuel pressure?

whitesih/blueish, more opaque white.. though when started and after that no smoke going down the road. NO heavy smoke unless I pound the accelerator
in neutral.

Here's an easy one if you run out of stuff to try. With key off unplug the map sensor electrical plug and take it for a spin around the block. The CEL light will come on and if the truck drives "Much Better" then the map sensor if bad. If the truck drives about the same then map sensor is OK. Just one more thing to eliminate.

HOLY COW!!!

I took off the MAP sensor, OMG what a difference, I never would pull out into a lane before now, I went to town sat there and thought its now or never, I had enough distance with oncoming traffic so I was stil safe and they were too.

I took off in first gear like a sprint car, it was so flustered I forgot to shift, it hit the rpms so fast,.........this is the power I was lacking

YOU GUYS ROCK

OK here is the new question?

CAN I LEAVE THIS THING OFF TILL I CAN GET A NEW ONE?

Sure, I don't see why not. The PCM is making a best guess on boost with the map sensor disconnected. I often wondered how may bad one are really out there.
