I'm looking to get some more work out of my 302 as well. Definitely unimpressed at this point. My 300 seemed more powerful.

 

Working on rebuilding the 7.3 for my 1969

 

Replaced the distributor because it had a bad PIP sensor. Heat soak issue solved.

 

Still trying to get more familiar with my truck, I pulled out the drop in bedliner to see what had accumulated over the last 25 years. To my surprise, it just needed to be swept out. There were no dents or rust, only a couple of areas where the liner had rubbed the original paint off. After having it out, i am considering a spray in bedliner.

 

Good call, I'm sure many guys have had no problems with drop ins (even you said there was no rust, and that it did it's job) but roll/spray in liners are my go-to choice, simply because they don't retain moisture at all

 

First, I am not a Ford mechanic. I am a Old "Hippie" Porsche and VW mechanic.

So, my technology peak is about 1979. But, I understand basic Bosch FI etc. as I have worked on those systems. Secondly, I am new to posting on the site, so please forgive me if my post here is not within normal protocol.

With that said, I purchased a 1992 Ford F150 automatic 4X4 with a 4.9 in-line 6 cylinder engine. I initially bought it in cold weather in <st1lace w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Nevada</st1:state></st1lace>.

Since I first bought it 4 months ago, the truck ran fine with the exception that from time to time, after shutting it down for only a few minutes, the truck would not start. So, being an old <st1lace w:st="on"><st1:state w:st="on">Oklahoma</st1:state></st1lace> ranch hand, I sprayed starter fluid in the intake hose and it would start every time. I have been guessing that a dirty fuel filter might be the culprit? As the fuel filter I believe is in the tank, and as I have been delaying the job, I have been spraying a shot of starter fluid in to start a warm engine and it has usually always worked. But, today it was 80 degrees and although I let the truck sit for about and hour;which is usually enough to allow a start - even without starter fluid) today, after 1 hour- no start. Update - I just got back from picking up the old Ford as the temperature had dropped down to about 48 degrees. It started right up! When the problem occurs, it just seems that there in not fuel getting to the engine?


Recently I read thread concerning the AIC might be the culprit???

I have been looking at threads today, and troubleshooting advice ranged from O2 sensors, to other sensors, etc.. Now, wow I do not know where to start. Also, I have never pulled a code in my life (remember 1978 Technology expert), so any ideas on a good plan of attack troubleshooting the issue would be very much appreciated.

Swapped maf electronics. Truck runs awesome now!

 

Was it the 89 or the 91 you swapped, and was it swapping a MAF for the MAP that you did?

just finished swapping out the thermostat and the gasket, found the piece I was given for the houseing was incorrect so that means time to go back to Autozone and swap it for the correct one, then once I have that I can complete this project!!!

 

I swapped the 89 (pictured in my sig) No I had 2 mafs a c&l with a 24# injector sample tube and a 94/95 gt maf. I was having issues with the electronics on the 94/95 gt maf so I swapped the electronics from the c&l to the gt housing and we are good to go again.

 

I got an alignment yesterday with all my new parts in. I finally got to drive my truck across town without death wobble.

Now I want to do more but I don't know where to start.

 

I hear you. I'm at that point where all I have left are minor cosmetic issues and extremely expensive projects like engine/tranny rebuild and paint.

 

Pulled the driveshaft out and got ready to pull the trans back then noticed all the linkages that I prefer not to disconnect so I instead removed the engine and reinstalled it and it is turning great now.
Now just need to get my helicoils to finish the heads and a few other parts and I will be back in business.

Plugged a tire. Ugh. Hear an ominous POP sound coming down the highway. Couldn't figure out what it was. Got home a few minutes later and as I walked around the truck the RF tire was going down. Luckily I made it home. It had a 3" long deck screw(head first) in the center of the tread.

Pulled it off, plugged it and put it back on. Back to good. Been holding air fine. Still have probably 20K miles left on the tires before needing replaced.

 

Put a new starter in my 95 ccdd in the parking lot of work. Didn't start when I went to leave at 4 in the morning. Had to call the wife. She had to wake the kids and load them up to get me.
