Customcab is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
352 Oil filter mount.

I realize a truck oil mount is horizontial and passenger car's are vertical. But why can't I use a vertical oil filter mount instead of a truck type. I beleive there's enough clearance over the top of the crossmember or is there????
Future plans on installing a 352 4V from a 65 Galaxie 500 into my 65 F100.
Pending my financial planning. lol

garbz2 has a good reputation on FTE. garbz2 has a good reputation on FTE.
No reason it don't work, There is enough room. But it just allows more oil to drool on the cross member as it will dump a quart as you spin it off..

I figure it would work; due to a buddy having a 428 inside a 72 2wd, using the same engine perches, I seen good clearance and I guess folks just think it has to be a truck motor look( horizontial filter); instead of a well built machine. I like the vertical filter; seems less messy in changing my oil, when the filter screw downward insted of side ways.
Thanks for the reply Garbz.

Simple solution if you have a clearance problem, or want to use a shorter oil filter.

Use an FL-300 oil filter instead of a FL-1-A.

Ford came out with the FL-300 in 1975, because Mustang II's with 302 V8's didn't have enough clearance between the oil filter adapter and the cross member to use an FL-1-A.

Mitch, the 428 has the same external engine dimensions that any other FE engine does. In fact, its block is a 352 when first cast.

btw: If your left motor mounts breaks apart, (which while not common, isn't rare either), guess what happens to a vertical mounted oil filter?

The filter may hit the crossmember, and it only takes a coupla hits before the filter cracks open. :-(

Now you have a REAL mess!!

That's why trucks have horizontal mounted filters, and cars have vertical mount oil filters.

Cars have far more clearance, because of the deeper crossmember.

Okay, I've not long been a member and I've seen literally HUNDREDS of posts by you, NumberDummy. At first I thought "Wow. This fella is pretty good." You've taken it to a whole other level with the posts I've read tonight...

My grandfather retired from the FoMoCo plant in Atlanta around '80-'81. He's never mentioned the first thing about unique parts, designs, etc...save for the time he brought some sort of energy consuming black silly putty looking rubber crap from the plant one day years ago. If I remember correctly, you could put this stuff around an egg and smash it with a hammer and the egg not break.

THAT is what bumpers should be made of....

FWIW I ran into this issue while swapping in a 390 into i-6 powered 66 f100. The filter does hit the crossmember. It is not a Ford part and that may be the issue itself. I will search for a FL-300 until I can come up with a different filter adapter!
