fenix1 is starting off with a positive reputation.
Engine overheated the other day and went to hittin' on 5 cylinders. Shut it off let it cool down for 30 minutes. Took thermostat cover off...stuck shut. Trashed it and replaced thermostst cover. Filled it up with water and drove it home bout 10 miles. Anyway, drained crankcase and was NO water in the oil. Then drained what water was left in radiator...NO oil in the water. Pulled plugs and ran compression check...hardly any on #1 cylinder. QUESTIONS: If heads are O.K. should I just replace the gaskets! Or, since I got that engine hotter than a firecracker just go ahead and replace gaskets and get new heads? Knowing if I pull the heads gonna break the exhaust manifold bolts; what size, type, and grade bolts are they? Any help would sure be appreciated!!!

The vehicle is an 88' Bronco II with a 2.9 5 speed. Real FUN thing to work on!!!

I'd pull the heads and check them for cracks very carefully, and be prepared for the worst. Here's a little article about replacing 2.9 heads:

2.9 Ranger Head Replacement .: Articles

And don't assume that you'll break manifold bolts, I got lucky and didn't break any though it wouldn't really have mattered since I was replacing the heads anyway. A good soak overnight with PB Blaster or some other good penetrant might help.
