99 v-10 at 105k miles

Ok. New to forum. Don't know if this belongs in the v-10 forum or the superduty forum or both.

I have a 99 Superduty with 105,000 miles. Original owner. And a 2002 Superduty with about 55K miles. Both V-10's. I drive the 99 mostly due to the age and it's a work vehicle. I plow and tow with both of them. The 99 gets used and abused more than the 2002.

The 99 makes a thump everytime I go over a bump. Ball joints are OK. Possibilities? Rubber bushings somewhere?

I need to change the Plugs, Shocks and Muffler in the 99. Also have to replace the NSS in the 99. (code reader, check engine light came on). At about 60k, i replaced the manifold bolts on the 99 and now I need to replace the bolts on the 2002. was making a funny ticking noise but I think that could either be the manifold or a broken plug? I havent driven it in a while cause of $$$$$ to fix it.

Shocks Bilstiens for about $67.50 each.
Muffler? I can get the stock one for about $300 from the dealer.
Plugs? No idea on what to get? Or how to replace them? are they under the black "boot" or casing or are they the orange things next to the black "boot"? This is why I think I should get the repair manual.

And I need to change the oil and air filter too. Was getting only about 250 miles to the tank when I usually get about 280 miles to the tank.

No one has posted pictures of HOW TO DO IT. I mean the plugs. I usually have the dealership work on most of my vehicles. I am a contractor that is pretty handy and can do almost anything with my hands. Its has always been about time for me. But shocks and a muffler are pretty easy things to do.

I also have a 99 jeep cherokee that my wife drives and the jeepforum always has pictures of anything you are looking for.

Should I get a chiltons manual for the truck? Are they pretty good with the Ford's?

Any advice? or am I missing a post that has pictures about replacing the plugs?

Yes...there is a thread that has pics and good description of how to do a spark plug change. See link...

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/45...th-photos.html

Keeping with the link...just use OEM Motorcraft spark plugs. They seem to work best on the V10 2v.

As you see in the pics in that thread...the spark plugs are under the COP (coil on plug) boots. The "orange things" are the fuel injectors.

IMHO...do both the '99 and '02 spark plugs. And replace the boots for added confidence. As you have already found...the exhaust manifold bolts do rust out...and need to be checked.

Good luck...and hope this helps.

Thump: Check the sway bar bushings.

Muffler: Check with FTEPARTSGUY.COM. He quoted me less than $300 for the ENTIRE OEM catback.

First...Shameless bump.

I started to replace the spark plugs on the 99 f-250 v-10. I got the first 4 out from the passenger side, took about 2 hours to get the 4 out. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO GET THE LAST ONE OUT? Lots of hoses to move out of the way.....

I had to reverse my truck to put the tools away for the night and will start again in the AM. It sounded kinda rough when I started it. I changed the air filter too.

I put in Bosch Platinum plugs.... Was this a good idea or bad idea?

How much are the boots? I wasn't even thinking about changing them when I got the plugs...Maybe I should.

There is a post with pictures and process on changing the plugs.
Best plug to use is Motorcraft
Definately change the plug boots.

I did install Bosch plugs. After reading all the stuff about spark plugs, yes, I should of installed OEM ones. I spent about 8 hours doing the plugs, and two COP's and one NSS. All codes are gone.

runs better. I will return the 10 other plugs for the 2002 and get motorcraft. But now that I know how to do it, it will go much quicker.

Update

I installed the new OEM muffler on the 99 and replaced ther swaybar bushings. Pretty easy. Just wish I had an impact wrench.

I had installed Bosch plugs and the truck seems to vibrate when I accelerate. Only when I step on the gas does it start to vibrate in the front end.

Tommorow I will replace with Motorcraft plugs.

Lesson Learned.

I cant think of any other reason why it would vibrate when I accelerate.

mike

But will be replacing shocks in a week or two with Bilsteins.

I would doubt the ball joints are ok if they are original.
I had to really pry on mine to see how loose they were, and it was also thumping over bumps and under braking.
Most SD's of the early years seem to need ball joint between 40-60K. Mine had 45K.

Well, I did replace the plugs with motorcraft. I also replaced another COP. Went alot quicker than the first time. However one of the Bosch plugs was bent backwards when I removed it. If I could post pictures, I would.

Still a little jerky.....But not nearly as bad as with the Bosch PLugs.
