Generator to Alternator conversion on a '62 390

Just bought a 62 T-Bird with a 390. Rebuilt the carb and got her running prime with almost no real work. Hooked up my multimeter and no charge coming from the generator (not shocking for being so old). I have a couple of old Ford alternators lying around from a 73 390 & a 69 360, I want to convert to a alternator on the 62 motor, but can't find where to get brackets, since the motor doesn't have the mount holes for the stock brackets. I've searched the forums, but only found one listing of someone doing the conversoin, but looked up where they got the kit to no avail. Any info folks have would be a great help. Thanks a ton!

1962: You missed it by one.

The first Ford factory installed alternator: 1963 Thunderbird.

All the rest of the cars & trucks got alternators across the board in 1965.

Before you ask, my 1960/64 car parts catalogs are loaned out, so I can't look up brackets for 1963 and see if they're the same as 1964.

I can look at the 1965/67 T-B brackets (different car parts catalog) and see if they carry 1963 or 1964 parts numbers.

The 1961/62 T-Bird generator(s) are the same as the ones used on 1960/64 Galaxies, prolly other models.

I believe the part number for one of them was C1TZ-10002-A.

EDIT: I'll call my pal at Mustang Service Center in NorHollywood tomorrow (he has a set of the 60/64 catalogs) and find out what those '63 bracket part numbers are...will let you know.

Thanks Bill. This car is running perfect besides the charging problem, and I need it on the road in the next week or so. My girl is going to use it to cruise to work and back around town, while I drive her pickup to LA for work. She has no interest in driving my 4x4 around, so I need to get this done. Let me know when you do. Thanks again!

Not sure of what is where on front of engine, but on my two Galaxies, I hung a alt. on the lower pass. side using the 7/16" bolt hole in front of pass. head. I then used a slightly modified sliding adjustment bracket from lower timing cover bolt. It's pretty slick, simple and tested to 6500 rpm and won't throw a belt!

You have any pictures of that set up? The C.R.A.P. kit looks great, but for the cost, I still wouldn't mind checking out other options.

I'll try to get a picture tonight? It's pretty simple set up, and I put it on both cars.

Alternator Mounting brackets.

C3SZ-10156-C .. Mounting Bracket

C3SZ-10145-A .. Adjusting Bracket

1963 Thunderbird only, not the same as 1964 :-(

1965/67 Birds ('65/67 390 & '66/67 428 all the same) uses the same brackets the Galaxies used, with/without A/C makes a difference.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FYI

I've bought used 1963 Galaxie parts from the following > >

Give Mike a call @ BIG M Automotive (Auto Wrecking) in Williams, CA (530-473-2225).

If anyone in CA will have them, this is the place.

He builds destruction derby cars and has dozens of 1960's Fords.

Here are a few shots:

Just some old parts I had laying around a some spacers.

This is the race car, so I have aluminum motor plate running across but it's all the same even on my other Galaxie(with blown 390).

Wow Larry that's a great idea!!! Very cool thanks for the pics. Looks like a pretty easy and cost effective thing to do. Sure beats spending $200 for the C.R.A.P. kit!!

Hmm, going out and comparing your pictures to my motor, I don't have the 7/16 bolt hole in the head for mounting. I just scraped all the crud off of the side with a razor, and it's all solid. I've been looking around the compartment for something else I could mount it to, but don't see anything yet...

My other car is a '64 motor, so maybe the early versions didn't have that bolt hole in the head? I know they did some changing in those early years as they added things.

When I removed the generator off street car, I can't recall where it mounted? Down low wasn't it? I figure that it had to use that hole, maybe your bracket is different. I'd have to dig out my original gen/bracket to check it out.

Numberdummy said it in post #2. First factory alternator was in 63. So my heads don't have the extra tapped holes in the heads. I'll get a couple of pictures of what I'm working with. Maybe we can collectively brainstorm.

The measurements of the mounting holes on the alternator are really close to the generator. Doesn't seem like it would be TOO hard to build something to mount it...

Here's some pictures of the ugly thing (sorry they're so huge!)

Hmmm.... Looking at the C.R.A.P. bracket, I'm starting to think I could cut one of those out of a not too large piece of steel... It's something to consider. I think I have the tools to do it (I'm extremely limited outside of hand tools). It seems I could build one using a drill and cutoff wheels.
