I picked up a flathead today, I assumed it would need to be rebuild, but when I pulled the oil pan this fell out after I turned the crank. (the block was upside down on the stand when it fell out) what is it? it was towards the rear by the oil pump.
I also got an additional oil pan, looks like its for an older 59? or earlier series. starter is mounted to the pan for the blocks that had the bellhousing cast as part of the block? is this correct?
It seems the stamping on the block right rear corner on the block is missing a letter all that is stamped is 2 2 L Image # 102 should have a letter then 2 2 L but not sure, also not sure what the upside down 1 stamps or the 31 inside the little square mean?

It's been over 40 yrs since I had a flatty apart, but I believe it's the fuel pump pushrod (0BA-9400).

Jmadsen, I'd go look at my 8BA right now, but the weather is winning the battle.

Its the fuel pump push rod, looks like it has been broken off as they are about 7-8 inches long with a larger diameter section on each end. Can't tell from the picture if it has been twisted or sheared off but that is what it is. Was there a fuel pump on the engine when you got it, if not someone has tried to pull the rod out and it has been stuck in the hole.
that's definetly not a fuel pump pushrod! looks a little big for a idler gear on oil pump. appears to be a broken distributor shaft. unless some competent mechanic lost a drift. is that a wire sticking out end of (gadget?). be interesting to know. petey shoes
That you took the picture two years ago knowing that you would be asked (cool) or the time in your camera needs setting? Yep it sure looks like it, what is it, part of a tool handle, cam bearing driver?
Looks suspiciously like this, what do you think.
Measure the piece, it should be 1.75" X .375 on the larger diameter section.
The scale sure makes a difference! Is that a fuel pump pushrod?! Mine had a short larger-diameter cap on top, Like on an OHV pushrod almost, nothing that long. Is that maybe a way to repair worn pushrods (add-on section?)
So if the PO was running an electric fuel pump, he may have cut the pushrod down to plug the bushing but not ride on the cam?
