I met a man retired from the Coast Guard tonight -

I don't think I have stood around and yacked about the old times like that in ages....

We had similar stories, he's an old salt and I think will be visiting a lot. A real pleasure to meet and yack to - we spent an hour just relating old stories in front of the store!

Name was Gary - and sincerely knew his stuff!

It's wonderful to bring back the days we lived, crap went through, and see that we all saw the same things in each other and the people around us. Gary is a "NO SCHEISSER" from the old days, and we have lots of stories to relate....

Also a knife collector - and he and Poppa Don may have a lot in common.

(Poppa Don was in Vietnam, and is an excellent gunsmith)

When I finally committed myself to going in (to the military) I was told I was joining the largest fraternity/sorority on earth.

I know what that means now....

IT IS TRUE

*Gary knew that knife - even though I didn't have it with me to show him.

Smile mowing grass

Recieved this email from a friend - of a soldier in Iraq. According to the email his wife sent him some US soil and seed so he could have the smell of grass from home. This is great.

Did you ever notice that if you go to work where there are a number of employees, you can generally pick out the ex-military employees just by actions and bearing? They are usually the ones you gravitate to as you make new friends....

This only someone who's been there can understand. Nothing lonelier than 0200 guard duty all alone in the middle of east nowhere.

Homemade is starting off with a positive reputation.
I have not been to Iraq But I remember sitting on the bow of the ship manning a 50 cal with night vision in Kuwait harbor at night.
Freezing to death and during the day its 126.

At least you get to drop back home for a while. That's great!

I did my share of nine month cruises, shore leave only does so much.

Then send him another message and encourage him to read the thread and then ask his questions. If he reads the thread he should be able to figure out there are folks from several generations posting here who have no interest in the recruiting headcount aspect. Just a bunch of different people who have been there and done that. It's also a good place for his parents to voice any concerns since the odds are many of us here are at least as old as Billy's parents, so we can comment on that perspective as well since our own kids are in a similar age group.

Just reading up on some of this, makes me kinda homesick. I have been retired now for 6 years on the 1st of August.

My oldest boy just left a couple weeks ago for Basic training with the Army. He is now in Ft. Benning, Ga. Kinda wish I was there with him.
