You are now the Dallas/Fort Worth point of contact.
What that means so far I have no idea yet. We'll have to see how it all works.
What is the nearest base to you?
I know Ft Worth has Carswell Air Force Base, which is mainly reserve componeants. DFW is mainly gaurd and reserve. It is about 2.5 hours from Ft Hood and about 4 hours from the San Antonio Bases. I've made the drive plenty of times from Ft Hood to DFW, its a long 130 mile drive at least it feels like it. Yall need any help let me know, I'll do what I can from Afghan.
The Army has 3 components. Regular active duty, Army reserve, Army National Guard.

I was halfway thinking the National Guard was a completely seperate branch in it's own right - like the Coast Guard. Just goes to show what 20 years as a specialist can do to somebody, I have no clue...
Reps to all the Vets in this thread! Just thanking you for what you've done! I'm proud to be a part of this thread.....although I'm not a Vet. Just here to help out in whatever way I can.

I just went and looked it up - it's an interesting story, I tell ya what.
There are two components, it turns out. The ARMY National Guard, and also the AIR National Guard. Both can be called up by either States, or by the Federal Government.
They are dual purposed - they have fought in every war since the Revolutionary War, but are also called into play within the territorial United States during emergencies.
-The ARMY and AIR National Guard is fighting fires in Northern California, following a call up by Governator Arnold.
-Units are battling floodwaters in Missouri and elsewhere along the Mississippi river.
-The National Guard was mobilized on 911.
-There was a huge mobilization of Guard units following hurricane Katrina.
I discussed this with some of the other moderators/admins, and we felt that it probably wasn't the best thing to do.
The reason being... the site has first and foremost been a truck site, focused around trucks, and we have previously have had suggestions for a womens chapter, a Technician chapter - and to be fair, to all parties concerned, we have said that the best way is to offer up our current off-topic resources, and start a thread in them.
We above all, attempt to be a site where unity abounds, and everyone feels involved. As such, we decided that any chapter that is focused based on anything that isn't regional, isn't best suited with the "FTE ethos".
Thanks, and my apologizes,
Adrian
It ain't gonna happen this way people. We need to improvise, adapt, and overcome!
We can still do it, but it has to be an inside operation. (covert)
NOW - I could suggest an armed forces thread be made, but we already have one.
Ideas solicited....
This ain't over yet.

NOTE: DO NOT boycott FTE, they are the best thing we have going. I for one will always be here if you are looking to find me.
I can't politely express how frustrating that is though. CUSS WORDS would be required....
On that note, I don't want any of you to get booted for starting a pee'ing war with the admins or mods. Let ME worry about it.
I think you're problem is you spent too many years in the Navy and are used to having what you need available, but with your comment about adapt, improvise, and overcome, there's hope for you yet. I'm not concerned with Adrians comments.
From an old Marines perspective, we have our objective identified and established what tools we have to work with. Since there will be no Armed Forces chapter for members to look in, each of us will have to be more aggressive in seeking out those in need, much like you did to the lady in the thread you linked earlier.
We all need to spend some time stopping in other sections of the tech threads, and monitoring things under the "New Posts" feature to keep a look out. We can then post back here with links as needed. In addition to the phone list, I think we need to compile a list of who spends time in each tech section so we know where out weak areas are that may need reinforcements. No point in tripping over each other monitoring the same threads and leaving others unobserved.
You can put me down for the 99 - 03 7.3 & Super Duty tech forums.

One of the first things they taught us at boot camp: "WORK WITH WHAT YOU'VE GOT! It probably ain't gonna be much..."
I've been re-thinking what I was expecting, and what it is I want to do. You're right, and so are the moderators. So am I...
A Military Chapter doesn't need it's own chapter forum, nor is it a good thing to have a lot of our information available to the general public. I think I can get away with my new title, and the nearest base to me as my location.
I don't think it would be accepted under the circumstances if I were to place something in my signature about a military chapter of FTE, since it isn't officially sanctioned. I'm still considering the ins and outs of this...
Obviously if I posted a thread titled "FTE ARMED FORCES CHAPTER" it would be closed in the blink of an eye, even if it had no chapter forum and was all entirely offline.
As far as organisation - I guess we'll just have to be "FLEXIBLE". Does that sound familiar???
At this point it seems to come down to:
"BACKCHANNEL, BE ALERT, PROVIDE BACKUP"
More than that I doubt anyone can ask of us.

For my location I named the base nearest me (I shop there).
Guys just a quick observation. The National Guard is also the oldest branch of the military. It used to be called the militia. They are technically part of the Army but have their own budget recruiters and bases. In my state there are no active duty stations. However their area bunch of National Guard units and a few reserves. Also my brother-in-law who is in the National Guard served 18 months in Iraq just like the Regular Army guys.

One thought I had was to be familiar with nearby bases and what services they have.
There is often a car repairs shop that does things for military people at reduced rates, but if you want to get right up inside it and see for yourself the Auto Hobby Shops of the US NAVY, and Auto Crafts Shops of other branches are there for you to use.
You've never had a better garage at your disposal!!!
GO THERE, and see for yourself....
Your nearest base has a website, and MWR is the link to look for it at.
ANYWHERE YOU ARE STATIONED they have one...
If they don't - someone needs to drop a dime in the CMC or Staff Sargeants ear to make it so.
There is no reason to be at the mercy of commercial exploitation.
I have found that at military.com not all bases are listed. Such as Selfridge in Michigan. Very nice base with all facilities. Package store (primary stop), etc.
