Cat Coolant

Is cat extended life coolant good to use? It is suppose to have the additive for cavitation. Would you use it? If not what coolant?

Thanks

I suppose the CAT coolant would be fine, but in my experience anything that comes from CAT comes with a healthy price tag. I run regular Prestone antifreeze in all of my company diesels along with Fleetgard DCA additive. I also test the coolant at every service and add more DCA when necessary. Fleetgard also makes test strips that tell you the condition of your coolant. Hope that helps. Justin

If I recall, isn't Catapillar coolant very expensive? I'm thinking $30.00-$40.00 per gallon? If it's what I'm thinking of it came highly recommended for the PSD but the expense was the negative issue.

Someone else will jump in and probably have more to add.

Rog- I think it's more like $8 a gallon (still expensive for coolant) but is good up to 300K and requires no mixing- pour it right in. That's probably where you got the $40 figure- it would cost about that to fill your truck up (slightly more I'd guess).

You are probably right on the figure. It's been a long time ago that the issue came up. I guess it would be worth it if you had a filter to pick out the crap that flakes off, other wise I wouldn't want to go 300K. I'm not even sure I'll live that long.

You can still get it at wal-mart. Not too expensive.

Wally World carrys Catapillar coolant? WOW!

I'll have to check that out. If it's cheap enough I'll think about stocking some for the next change.

Thanks Rubber Duck

I just came from Wally World and they told me that they never did have Cat Coolant BUT....there is a antifreeze that is for trucks that is a 50/50 pre-mix and it lists cummins, cat, etc everything but ford $9.95 gal. I know, I dont recall the name but it's something like "Truckgard"

I don't know what color it is but my Napa carries it (Don't know the price)

I installed a coolant filter last year when I went through the entire system and changed all hoses and 203* stat and housing.

One thing for sure you can count on quality on most things from CAT.

I agree!
