Leaky Exhaust Manifold

All,

My 00 F250 7.3 is in the shop getting checked out and maybe som PM. They just discovered the driver's side exhaust manifold is leaking. They will give me a price tomorrow to remove it, have it milled and reinstall it. Do you think it is better to replace it vs. mill it if the costs are double or less?

It also appears I have something going on in the suspension or hub bearing...

This is going to get expensive quick and I do not have the time to do it myself.

Thanks..

Neil

Bump
Just curious what they found that led them to a leak on the manifold? I think I might have the same issue on my 2000. It sounds like an exhaust leak until it is really warmed up, and then it pretty much goes away. Maybe someone will have some info for your question.

Exhaust Leak

00 Dave, the mechanics found a large amount of soot around the exhaust manifold indicating a leak. I can attest to having an exhaust leak when the engine was cold. In fact, I thought and hoped it might have something to do with a clogged EBP tube as that would be an inexpensive repair. The leak seemed to go away once the engine warmed up. I hope this is the only leak but there is no way of knowing until the exhaust manifold is replaced. The mechanics are pretty sure the turbo was not being properly fed due to the leak, which they claim was pretty large. But again, I did not notice an exhaust leak once the engine was warm but I am hoping that this was the cause of my truck being a dog which the mechanics noticed on the test drive. In fact, they told my I had an exhaust leak while on the test drive. I couldn't hear it over the normal diesel noise.

I have only had the truck for a couple of months and put about 1500 miles on it. No telling how long this manifold has been leaking. Hopefully, no more leaks and much more boost, turbo whistle and MPG (was getting 12-13).

They are going to install the 4" exhuast and gauges (tap manifold before installing please) too so I am not sure if I'll be able to tell how much curing the manifold leak did by itself.

Thanks..

Neil

Are you asking a ? or just telling us a story and what you are doing? I have not seen many manifold leaks here as opposed to up pipe and donut leaks. The manifolds rarely leak unless they crack. I might insist on looking at the suspected leak area.

Perhaps your power loss is CAC tube hose leak related. Your other condition could be EBV related.

Leak

I am replying to 00Dave who wanted to know how the exhaust leak was found. My truck is currently being worked on.

As for manifold not usually leaking, 3 different mechanics looked at my truck. One of them I know fairly well and I trust him. He is the reason the truck is at this shop. He has his own modded 7.3 so he is very familiar with them.
If they say the exhaust manifold is leaking, I believe them until proven otherwise. Problem is, if the manifold leak is as bad as they say it is, and is the source of my truck being a dog and getting poor MPG, we won't know if anything else is leaking until the manifold is replaced. I guess we are working from the bottom up on this one. Who know how long it has been since the turbo was able to make 15-20lbs of boost. Hopefully they'll have it done by Tuesday with the new gauges and exhaust.

By the way, what does CAC stand for?

Thanks..

Neil

Charge Air Cooler. The CAC system includes everything from the turbo outlet to the intake manifold.

FWIW Fel-Pro makes exhaust manifold gaskets for the 7.3. I've had them on mine for a little over 50,000 miles, they don't leak.

Exhaust Manifold Gaskets

OEM apparently did not come with any exhaust manifold gaskets. I asked the dealer. I'll call and Autopart store tomorrow to check into the Fel Pro.

What year was your application for the gasket? Did your truck already have the gasket or did you just add to?

Thanks..

Hmmmm

I already bought and delivered the manifold to the shop. I wonder what they'll say about putting in a gasket vs. replacing the manifold.

Did you use your truck for the Fel Pro gaskets or did you come up with an application with a 7.3 or T444-E that they listed a gasket for?

Thanks for the info.

Thanks..

I take it you're having a difficult time finding them.....the Fel-Pro part number is 93489, and you can get them at Autozone under part number MS93489. The retail for $36.99

Neil, thanks for posting the info on this. Please keep us posted on what you do to solve the problem. I'm really curious about the use of the gaskets. Seems like that would save some money!
