6.0 Fuel filters When to change???
Had the truck at Ford today because the batteries were dead. They replaced them for free under warranty at 18,000 miles. While it was there they indicated I should get the $130 fuel filter change job. At what mileage should these be replaced? Is this an easy job? How much are the filters?
Thanks,
Jim

They recommend every 15,000 and I’ve read things on here as well as other boards that confirm they get pretty dirty with this amount of mileage. I just bought the filters from the local dealer for 60 includes both filters. Pretty simple to do if you look in the tech section I'm sure there is a write up on it. Really helps if you go to a parts store and buy a oil wrench socket 36mm that fits the cap on the frame filter and use a long extension with a universal. I also found this write up about it.
"To replace the primary fuel filter on the HFCM, I use a 36mm 1/2" drive socket with a universal joint, and a long extension, while loosening/tightening the cap from the back side of the transfer case, using a 1/2" drive ratchet. Before you do this, it is wise to remove the 6mm allen head water drain plug first, so that you won't have such a messy spill when you remove the cap. To make water separator draining easier, it is recommended that you replace the 6mm allen head plug with Ford part number 6E7Z-9C082-A ("**** style" drain used on Ford LCF trucks). This is what it looks like:

Read your owner's manual... in addition to the fact that fuel filters should be changed at 15,000 mile intervals, you'll learn all kinds of other useful stuff about your truck.
Buy the filters at your friendly local International (Navistar) truck dealer.... part number 1847170C91. About half the price the Ford dealer wants.
As an aside.... what the heck did you do to kill your batteries in 18,000 miles?
Edited to add..... International will also sell you the "****" style plug for less than the Ford dealer.... but I don't have the part number handy. Maybe somebody will chime in with it.

As a new owner of a 6.0L you need to read the threads in the Tech Folder.
Specifically, here is a very good link for new owners:
<TABLE style="WIDTH: 607pt; BORDER-COLLAPSE: collapse" cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=809 border=0 x:str><COLGROUP><COL style="WIDTH: 607pt; mso-width-source: userset; mso-width-alt: 29586" width=809><TBODY><TR style="HEIGHT: 12.75pt" height=17><TD class=xl24 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #d4d0c8; BORDER-TOP: #d4d0c8; BORDER-LEFT: #d4d0c8; WIDTH: 607pt; BORDER-BOTTOM: #d4d0c8; HEIGHT: 12.75pt; BACKGROUND-COLOR: transparent" width=809 height=17>https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/706336-new-6-0l-owners-tips-to-prevent-comon-problems.html</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
You can get TONS of good advice reading through the thread and the links.
Also there are very recent posts on this topic (look for a thread: Ford Defines Severe Service).
There is no alarm for plugged fuel filters. Fuel pressure below 40 psig damages injectors. Change filters religiously at "AT MOST" 15,000 mile intervals. Change at 10,000 miles in severe service.
Fuel economy is impacted by plugged fuel and air filters.
