'97 F150 Rear Drum to Disc Conversion
I am lookin to conver the rear brakes from drums to disc. Drums are a royal pain in the a** and i am tired of em. I want to have a good set of brakes on the back of my truck. Any suggestions as to how this could be done? A buddy of mine said the same body style 97-03 F250 rear discs might work. Thoughts??

I'll look forward to this. I know the emergency brake is totally different and might not be useable after the swap. Also there should be some kind of proportioning valve that would need to be changed but it might work the way it is. I also think the brake hoses need to be the newer disc brake ones. I have a set of rear disc's I'd like to swap but haven't done it yet and look forward to seeing if anyone has.

A 99 or newer axle is the best route. I bought disks from a 99 and found it will be some custom work to install. The disk rear also has larger wheel bearings which gave it greater load. The bearing had to be smaller to to accomodate the drum brakes. I would sell my set for $50 bucks if you are still interested. In the Kansas City area.
I bought the disk from a guy who put a 98 drum in a 99 disk to replace a bad rear. So I am confident the 99 will go in a 98. 97 I would think as well. You do want the cables, they are different on the axle end. Same on the truck end.

I guess we need to clarify some stuff, I assume F250 was a typo since '97-'03 were not congruent years for the F250. '99+ F150's came with rear discs, although some still had drums. I know others on other sites have put '99+ discs on '97-'98 F150's but they didn't have an ebrake after it was done. Also somewhere in '99-'00 Ford went to 14mm studs, previous had 12mm studs.

about the e-brake. The cables I have with the disk back plates will tie into my 98 e-brake. So I from what I see from putting the parts up against the existing cables, the e-brake should still work. The fact that I have not done the swap means I would be missing something very obvious. The disk to drum did have e-brake as well??? If the cables are cut and not disconnected, as we know all junk yards do. lol Then e-brakes would be lost. Larger studs in 99+ makes sense to go with the higher payload of the axle.

i was chatting with my friend about doing this conversion. He suggested just dropping the entire rear end and replacing it with a rear from a 99 or newer f150 that already has disks. My question now is, does anyone know where I would be able to pick one up? I also am lookin for one with limited slip in the back. Havin an open rear sucks when goin off roading...

Check with your local scrap yard. They will have a locating system if they don't have one in stock. Recommend that you get one with 3.73 gears. Look for a B6 tag code. Good luck!
