Question 77/79 radio new speakers help..........

I'm trying to put a factory am/fm out of a 78 or 79 in my 73 model. Never had door speakers and PO cut the wires. I know it grounds through the chassis and know my hot wire.

Problem is whenever I try to hook it up remotely, just to check it out all I get is static. A radio guy told me that the radio had "common ground" and that a lot of the new speakers didn't like that. I can't tell any difference having the antenna hooked up or not in the sound. I can unhook the remote ground to the chassis, and it will ground throught the antenna. Does this sound right? It could just be the radio is defective, don't know any history. I'm just trying to find out if there is something to the common ground that I should know. I hooked the speaker up grounded to the speaker ground on the plug, and the other speaker wire to one of the other plugs on the connector.

I hope this makes sense and someone has some ideas but I'm out of my league.
