Went to a meeting today where they talked about alternative fuels. Got me to thinking about making my 69 run on E85. Did a little checking and I think I could to it for under a $1000. Carb, Fuel Pump and lined Gas tank. Would be kind of cool but Not sure if I am ready to spend that kind of $$$ Yet! Any one had any experience with an FE on E85?

 

You should do it. You'd make alot more power..........at least that's what the guys in the FE forum told me when I built my motor. You have to increase your jetting alot from what I understand. On Desktop Dyno (for whatever it's worth) my build made like 60 more horse and a good bit more torque. It also put my build at like 400 hp and 450 tq......I'm not sure I have quite that . I figure I've probably got 350 hp and 425 tq at the flywheel.....most likely about 200 hp and 250 tq by the time it goes through the C6 and Dana 60

See post #13. So I was wrong, only 10 more horse, but 25 or so ft-lbs. It'd been a few days since I re-visited that thread and looked at the numbers. Anyway, if I'm making what that says I am, it sure doesn't feel like it in that heavy pickup.......

Be ready to run to the gas station quite a bit more often if you run it straight. I run E85 in my Monte Carlo. I have to fill up quite a bit more often if I run it a lot.

Although the octane is a lot higher I dont know that you are going to see as many positives as you may think. I have heard that racers like to use it because its cheaper than av gas or race fuel.

E85 may look cheap but bye the time you mix in regular gas with it to get some better mileage, I think the cost comes close to washing out.

Keep in mind I did no scientific study just some personal experience.

 

Cornfed - I hear what your saying but for me its not the cost per gallon - Its the $500 billion a year we send to the Middle Eastern A-- Ho--s that want to kill me and my friends. I would much rather spend more money and have it go in the pockets of the boys I drink beer with, vacation with and want me to do well in my life rather than those that want to see me die. Let them eat their sand - It don't taste very good!

 

Ha I hear ya. It is just that some people see it as a magic fuel when there are drawbacks with it.

Anything this country can do to get alternatives out there is good. Ive read that E85 can also be made from a variety of sources. For some reason we are stuck on corn.

If you go through with it, good luck! We all need to do what we can.

 

Now I just need to figure out how to run my diesel without paying four bucks a gallon!!

Put it on a trailer and haul it around with a gas burner!

 

Waste veggie oil or process veggie. Costs a bunch to set up and have to find a pickup route for the oil. I don't have the time or inclination so I think I'll just stick to the beater yota DD and use the diesel when I need the towing power. Still I'd much rather drive the SD.

Ive seen that distillery if thats what you want to call it to make fuel from veggie oil on TV. That looks like a real slick process and a money saver.

On Mythbusters once they drove an older Oldsmobile diesel on straight veggie oil, ran fine. Of course that looked like an 80's vintage car also.

Why dont you just take the plunge and throw some Canola in your tank.

 

I think even the newer vehicles will run on straight veggie if it is filtered good, but the problems come if it is cooler and it gels easily. If you run the unprocessed veggie, you still need to start on diesel and clear the lines of veggie with diesel before you shut off. Not real practical for short drives.

 

I figured the only reason it worked on the show was because of the older technology. I didnt think it would jive to well with sensors and what not. It would be neat i think to see if you cant cut it in with your diesel in the tank.

Throw 5 gallons of veggie oil in and fill er up with diesel. Who knows.

Hmmmm...I'm thinking I'm gonna pass on the experimental veggie oil. With my luck, it would gunk the '06 all, and warranty wouldn't cover fixing it!!
