Why does my pump gas truck sound like a diesel?

Hey,

My name is Kelly and recently I put the performer camshaft and intake manifold from edlebrock on my 1986 5.8L 351W HO engine.

I broke it in and changed the oil a few times. I floored it and going about 50 miles an hour it sounds like I have a diesel. The funny thing is before I broke it in the transmission line broke and I lost 4 quarts of transmission fluid and counting. Could my problem be transmission related?

Sorry that I can't describe the sound that I hear any better, but I need help and want to know if anyone knows what this could be!?

Thanks,

Kelly :-X23

Are you sure its in your engine? I'm no expert, but the first thing I would check is the timing. You had the distributor out when you put the cam in, so maybe its off, and you are getting spark knock when your advance moves. Just my $.02. Good luck,

He is right. You are to advanced on your timing. Back it off a few. (Turn the distributor counter clockwise). Set the initial to 10BTDC or whatever it says to under the hood. Make sure the vaccum advance is disconnected.

Why does my pump gas truck sound like a diesel?

Hey,
Thanks for your guy's input!

I know about the timing and such, I set it a t 10 degrees with the vaccume tube at the distributor removed. It also tells me to disconnect a wire that goes to my dura spark igniton but, I have that linked in with my MSD ignition and if I un hook it than it will shut my engine off. (no spark)

Is it critical to un hook that wire to get the timing right? Right now it says it's at 10 degrees.

I still get that sound... it starts at aroung 50 miles per hour!

Thanks

Kelly

See where your timing is at around 3,000 rpm. It should be around 34 - 40.
