F350 Dually Rear Axle

I've searched the forum and have seen that 3 axles wee available in the f350's, i think...the sterling 10.25, the dana 70HD, and also another sterling? well , please correct if i'm wrong, but since my truck is a dually cab and chassis...is it the Dana 70HD?

If the fill plug is in the rear cover, then you have a Dana. If the fill plug is on the driver's side of the casting, then you have a Ford/Sterling. I also found out from one of these I worked on, that your rearend is narrower than a pickup dually, and you have narrow rear leaf springs. The dually pickup rearend is a very wide rearend(4 inches wider than a normal pickup). Also your rear frame rails are narrower than a pickup frame(the measurement from frame rail to frame rail).

well, i just checked it. it's a ford/sterling, the fill plug is on the driver's side of the casting...so, if this is the case, i have a question. the truck is a long wheelbase cab and chassis, it used to be a dump truck with an L-Pack toolbox between the cab and dump body...or so the previous owner said...my hopes for buying the truck were to change the hubs over from a 2wd dually over to a 2wd SRW (Single Rear Wheel). I posted a little while ago if the front hubs would be able to be swapped over with f250 ro f350 single wheel hubs...and the answer was yes, most likely. Now, when you say the axles were different widths, how would the tires be tracking? if the front wheels stayed at the same position and the rears changed to singles...the rear tires seem like they would be close to the same as the fronts...would they be in line with each other for the most part? shoot me down if you feel this is a dumb idea...
Another question, is this sterling axle still a 10.25? one website (http://www.drivetrainspecialists.com/categories/ford/) listed there being a 10.25 AND a 10.5...which do i have? or is there a way i can tell by looking at the axle? thank you guys for your patience

I am not sure what size the rearend would be(10.25 or 10.5).

There is the strong possibility that your rear tires would not end up in the right place. I would do some measuring on a regular single rear wheel truck, and see what the backing plate to backing plate meaurement is, and compare it to your truck. If you are planning to put a pickup bed on your truck, I do not think that will not work either because of the frame. I have no personal experience with any of this it's just info I have picked up along the way, so just keep this in mind and do some measuring.

the sterling in that year will be a 10.25...the 10.5 being referred to is the Dana 70HD which is also option is those trucks. Lastly, Dana's have 10 bolt cover and sterlng's has 12.
