1971 F250 Mirrors: Luck with LMC Reproduction Type?

Has anyone tried the LMC part number 49-6521 Chrome Reproduction Door Mirror retailing for $39.95 as of 2007 Spring Edition Catalog?

I currently have the big truck style mirrors that are huge and somewhat obstruct forward/side vision. They remind me a driving 1950s vintage wheat trucks.

I would like to pull a boat some day with the 71 F250 and check the mirror to make sure it is still there. However, it seems that the smaller LMC Chrome Reproduction Door Mirror for the F100, F250 from 1967-1972 should work for that.

Any thoughts gentlemen?
Thanks!

If you want to sell the big truck style ones I would be inteested in picking up a spare set, they are hard to find.

If you are looking for the door mounted mirrors, that mount near the vent window with two screws, those are the same ones the cars used (except the remote mirror): 1967/72.

There were four types originally.

C7AZ-17682-G .. Right/Left Door Mirror-Rectangular Glass-No Hood over the Mirror ~ Originally used in 1967 only, but some of these will be seen thru 1979 on some F100/350's.

C8AZ-17682-B .. Left Door Mirror-Rectangular Head-Hooded. ~ 1968/72

C8AZ-17696-B .. Right Hand Companion Mirror for C8AZ-17682-B or C9TZ-17682-B. ~ 1968/72 ~ This mirror was optional.

C9TZ-17682-B .. Left Door REMOTE Control Mirror-Rectangular Head-Hooded. ~ 1969/72 ~ This mirror was also an option.

In 1967, a left hand door mirror was standard equipment on all light trucks for the first time (new Fed Safety Standard Laws was the reason). Previous years, all the mirrors were optional.

So Ford used the standard car mirror, but...

None of the mirrors were factory installed, that was the dealers job.

The standard mirror was boxed (in later yrs, it was shrink wrapped in plastic), and put on the cab floor at the factory. That left the buyer with the option of the installing different mirrors.

That way, if someone didn't want the car type mirrors, there were no holes to fill in the door, and the door wouldn't need to be repainted.

No mirrors were factory installed on trucks or Econolines, at least through 1996.

I hate to tell this, but we tossed 100's of those standard equipment car type mirrors in the trash cans every year. Most ppl didn't want them.

It's still possible to find those mirrors at swap meets, and IF there's a long established Ford dealer in your area, there might just be some of those mirrors stashed someplace in a storage area.

That is some good info, as I knew older trucks had no mirrors from the factory but I did not realize Ford continued that will into the 90's.

My dad tells me stories about when he was growing up and the parts and cars they threw away and it just makes my jaw drop as I would love to have the items they threw way years ago. Of course no one new that stuff would be wanted or even valuable back then.

Sure! However, I need to get the new ones on first.
It sounds like no one has objections to the LMC smaller reproduction type. If I don't hear anything bad, I will probably order next week. Last call for input...

I will keep you posted Fast-Ford.

Thanks!

Have you checked with your local dealer?

The owner of the first Ford dealer (Eagel) in Stockton was a packrat. Over the course of many years, he moved all his obsolete parts to a ranch he owned in Woodland.
In the mid 1970's, after he died, a couple of Ford obsolete parts hustlers bought the entire contents of the barn.

In that barn were over 50 years of new old stock Ford parts, and THREE brand new 1927 Model T's. It took two bobtailed trucks, five trips to move all those parts.

A treasure trove, to say the least.

And what was found in Woodland, pales in comparison to what we hauled out of the Ford dealer in Winters. That was the find of a lifetime.

Are the standard mirrors the fairly small ones? I would have to go out and measure but they look like they belong on a car. Being 6'4 its a pain to even see anything out of em.

The small chrome mirrors are maybe a little more stylish, but they are so small that they are not very useful as mirrors(I know because I have them on my '73, and it's hard to see anything with them). If you use your mirrors a lot, you would probably be better off staying with the big mirrors.

They were identical to the car mirrors..exactly the same ones in all but one case...see post #3 above.

In 1973, Ford offered a similar car type mirror, but this one was used on F100/350's and Bronco's only.

The mirror head was much larger, at least 25% larger, as I recall.

D3TZ-17696-L .. Mirror / The mounting hole pattern was the same as the 1967/72 mirrors.

Someone at Ford finally woke up to the fact that the car mirrors were next to useless to see anything out of.

I just went to Dennis Carpenters obsolete parts online website (800-476-9653), looking for some of these original mirrors.

His site shows C7TZ-17696-E, the Western Junior Swing-Lock stainless mirror KIT used 1967/72.

The kit consisted of two mirrors heads, the arms, the template and all the mounting hardware.

The Junior mirror doesn't have the third support arm, it's just two goose necked arms with the mirror in between. The mirror head is 6" X 10"
