04 Standard Cab Shortbed 4.6 Upgrades????

hello....i know this has probably been covered before but i never visit this forum because as you can see in my gallary, i still play with pushrod engines!

anyway

gotta buddy with an 04 f150 stx standard cab shortbed 2wd 4.6L automatic.... (pretty truck)
anyway we were talkin earlier that he wants to get some power out of it with some bolt ons and i told him i didnt know much about the modular engines, but i know some fellas who will!

hes thinkin...cold air intake, headears, high flow cat, cat back system, tuner and maybe some gears. how do these trucks perform with these bolt ons? is the exhaust and intakes still restrictive from the factory like my 87 5.0L was? and also does anyone know what size gear he has in this beast? thanks!

Your buddy is on the right track for basic mods. He probably as a 3.55 gear, look on door jam at sticker to be sure. I drive a 05 F150 short bed daily as my daily driver. It does well for daily stuff including loading up kids and toting them to school... I would proceed in this order for mods
1. flash tuner
2. exhaust
3. Cai.
4. gears.

the Mod motor is essentially a waste of time when it comes to bolt-ons. Forced Induction is the only true way to get power out of them. You can S/C the 4.6 and 5.4 for cheaper than putting a new intake and heads/cams.

but for small gains and better drivability, then

1. Tuner
2. Catback Exhaust
3. Cold Air Intake
4. 4.10 or 4.30 gears

the truck will be a completely different beast with those 4 above. For the money, though, Gears and Tuner are the biggest bang for the buck
