STGs D60 tech thread Part 3- useful diagrams and a trick

Exploded view of a D60 Front.

King pin view

When I got everything in my front 60 set up I had a wobble between 35-50mph. Since everything was new I knew it had to be an installation problem. I checked all the bearings and kingpin. I regreased and retightened everything. I drank and banged my head on it out but couldnt fix it. Through the vast knowledge of a former member I came up with the fix. Try to follow because Im not sure Im explaining it correctly...The extra weight and diameter of my 38.5" swampers is too much for the factory kingpin spring to handle which lessens the springs force on the bearing. This will simulate a worn out kingpin or ball joint. To fix this I used 7/8 grade 8 flat washers to add more preload on the kingpin. Works like a charm!
heres a pic

1. How many washers did you use until the problem was corrected?
2. Did the "former member" with the vast knowledge have punisher skulls on his trucks door?
3. How many miles have you put on since this fix and is the DW still gone?

Thanks.

1-I used 2 on the driver side with the king pin cup and 3 on the passenger side with the steering arm. I noticed the steering arm with the machined in steering cap was a few thousandths deeper than the stock one.

2- Yep thats him.

3-probably 300 miles or so. I dont keep up with it. Death wobble is gone up to 70mph. I havent driven it faster than that since.

Good to hear that worked, and is still working. Yes I thought you were talking about Pro. I remember a thread from several years back when fishman was having a death wobble problem and Pro described this cure. I'm not running a D60 yet but I'll keep this in mind. Thanks for the good tech!

I really appreciate the pictures in this thread. I've had the same problem since I threw the D60 under my truck but until now didn't quite understand the fix. Thanks. I have just one question about the size of the washers. I went to pick up some 7/8" washers but they looked huge! Is it 7/8" outside diameter of the washers or is it the washers with a 7/8" inside diameter opening? I haven't had time to go out and measure the king pins and my truck is being driven by the g/f today, sometimes I think she loves my truck more than I do. Thanks for the help.

The washers are 7/8 ID and maybe as big as 1 3/4 OD. They are the normal 7/8" washers you would buy for a 7/8" bolt. Yes they are big.

Admin puts the scales in the top right hand corner for a reason. If you use this trick how about click on it for me.

Not being ctitical, but when I performed this modification, I had read on another site that the 7/8" washer was the correct size, and I had to make it smaller to fit.
The more crtitical measurement is the OD, and not the ID. Many manufacturers may have different OD dimensions, and still have the same ID.
These examples and pics are Dorman, and Hillman fasteners. I even included a pic with a tape measure and stock spring shim for reference.

So last night I tore into the King pin caps. I ended up using one washer on each side. I first put in two washers on each side but it seemed like the steering was binding and didn't feel right, then I took one washer out on each side and she rides like a dream. It took away all signs of DW.
