I posted this in the forum for my truck years, but also, wanted to tap the knowledge of my fellow North Carolinians Truck lovers.

I have a 1992 F-150 Flareside 4x4, Transmission Fluid is leaking, well, its more than a leak, more like pouring out the front of the bell housing. My brother and I have looked at it, and think it is the front seal in the transmission. Several years ago he did work for a local transmission shop, his main job was dropping and re-installing transmission's after they were repaired. He seems to think it will take a day, two if we run across problems with rusty bolts etc.

My main question, and I hope someone here has worked on one of these or knows... with the electronic control shifter etc, would this be better going to a shop, or being that we are not going to go into the housing, should be be alright. I have faith that my brother and I can get it out, and replace the seal, and put it back, but I don't want to take a chance at screwing up anything electronic and costing more money in the end to save money....

if all you're doing is the seal, GO FOR IT. it really is'nt as bad as you think all the electric stuff is inside the pan on the valve body exept for the external sensors. if you're having any trouble with slippage or any other shifting issues, shoot for a rebiuld these trannies are not known as long haul contenders

 

Ditto what Mako said. Front seals are not a big deal but if there are alot of miles on her it might not be a bad idea to have it rebuilt while its out. Most of the cost in having it rebuilt is in labor, you would have alot of it done by pulling it your self and reinstalling it.

Thanks... I didn't think it was going to be a big deal, but I looked at one of those service manuals you pick up at Advance Auto and it started with all the warnings about the electronics so I thought I had better ask someone that might of have tackled this before.

It was rebuilt maybe 6 years ago. The local Ford Dealership I bought it from did the work. The truck has around 183000 on it, but the last year and a half it did a lot of sitting due to high gas prices, low gas mileage and a 170 mile round trip commute to work. Working 6 days a week kept me from really driving it on weekends. It was one of those things I kept putting off. Now I have a seal gone. My fault, I know it, and I am looking for others to maybe start leaking due to sitting like it did....
