question about intakes on the 5.4

At the Livestock show here in Houston. And as one would guess they have a rather extensive setup of vehicles to show off...trucks to be specific.

Noticed something about the 5.4 engines...the Expy's have a different intake plenum than the F-150's. Why is that? Is there that drastic of a volume difference in the engine bays?

The Expy doesn't have the air cleaner mounted right up near the TB like the F-150 does. Of course, I didn't see any hood opened on an F-150 so I couldn't do a quick compare on the two there at the show. Someone I recall mentioned a redesigned head and I figure this might be part of that. Just curious is all.

Ok... I've seen it in two forums now... What is an Expy?

Expy's I assume is for Expeditions. I think the package space between the Expy and F150s are different, so that's part of it. Plus, the Expy's were developed by the SUV team and the F150 by the truck team, so you'll see some differences as well. This will all change with the 09 which is the T1 platform, so the Expy's and F150s will share more components, so I'm assuming this will mean the same intakes.

I understand that its a resin compound and therefore easy to deal with...but wouldn't it have been a bit cheaper to just use the same engine as it sat with other vehicles?

I ask this as the same intake is available on the Mustang GT if I am not mistaken only with the 4.6 3V engine.

Ah well...I am not Ford's CFO so I am not that worried about it.

I imagine that Ford had different resonant sound strategies for both products. The F-150 could be a little "louder" than its SUV brethren. The Expy's intake roar is reduced to a whisper until 4K and even then it's not very loud.

My F-150 is (was) louder...but in a good, truckier way.

Monsta- You are correct, each vehicle has it's brand dna that management wants to meet. However, you would think we could commonize more items. When I worked there, car and truck couldn't use the same dipstick let alone intake manifold!!
