Front Bumper

Hi, My girlfriend just bought a 1961 Econoline Pickup. The original front bumper is a little wider than the truck and we don't really like that look. We noticed on some of the later models that the front bumpers don't hang out like hers. Is there a difference in the bumpers or have they used a bumper from another vehicle. Also is there a source for these bumpers. Any help will be appreciated.

Welcome to FTE

1961/64 used one type of bumper, 1965/67 another.

The difference is the styling, 1961/64 is dished, 1965/67 is flat.

The two types of bumpers also use different mounting methods.

It's also possible that another type of bumper was installed (from another Ford or ?), other than the following. Dodge used a similar bumper.

Thanks a lot for your help. You are a tremendous asset to the Ford Truck Forum. I would have never guessed that two different types of mounting methods would have been used, especially since the bodies are pretty much identical. We may try and locate a 1965/67 front bumper and swap out the mounting hardware and see if we can make it work. Thanks again for your help.

Later model front bumpers are a little shorter. I would have never known until someone pointed it out to me. You almost have to have a pair side by side to notice it.

Thanks for the input. We didn't really notice the difference until we got to looking at pictures on the internet. Does anyone know if there is a source for the later model (65-67) bumpers??? I have looked in Mac's and Dennis Carpenter and it doesn't appear that anyone is reproducing them. Is there anyone else or will we have to find one in a salvage yard??? Thanks in advance for any help.

You gotta be kidding me. I'm 45 and have owned early econo's since I was 14 and never knew they had different width bumpers. Well, I guess I learned my new thing for the day.


btw... I still have my '66 van that I bought when I was 14, and it's still in reasonable shape.... my '67 5 window p/u is in mothballs until I retire and re-do it, but it's a pretty good example of a low miles, nearly no rust '67. Gotta love the old econo's - anyone with half a left brain can work on them!! I should know!
