Ford 9 third member color

Ford 9 third member color
Stripping down the 9 inch on my 66 f 100. In the process of doing this I discovered that the third member appears to have been an orange or lets say pumpkin color...I guess for the pumpkin? Anyway when these trucks rolled out of the factory what was the color of the third member or pumpkin. Was it red, orange or literally pumpkin? Has been in the family since 67 or 68 don't ever remember having it rebuilt.
Well I am on the back side of this frame off restoration and 2 years down the road.....I finally can say it won't be long until I will be putting together nothing but clean rebuilt or new truck parts ...I CANT WAIT!!!

I posted the same question a few weeks ago in the trans section ( https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...on-9-rear.html )
When I sandblasted the rear where there wasn't rust there was black paint. Except for the 3rd member, there was a pumpkin orange color with no signs of black.
I am also into a frame off resto, 6 months into it. I pretty much now have a rolling chassis with engine trans rebuilt. My truck had a 3.70 rear gear so I'm in the process of gearing it up.
I'll be watching to see what answer you get.
Good luck, Doug

Gee, I was just under the rear axle today changing out the oil and installing a new vent hose. I can tell you that the entire axle is painted black. However, the axle cover had no black paint on it all all. Looked pretty much bare. Now in most restorations I have seen this painted primer red when it came to 9 inchers in a Mustang or a Cougar.

Orangy-red = where the slang term of "pumpkin" came from.
tbm3fan: that's carrier as in Ford basic p/n 4141, not carrier as in CV.
