Another Electric Choke Question

I did a quick search, but no luck.

1984 E350, stock 460 with 4BBL carb

The choke and fast idle will not come down for a long time after cold start, even after blipping the throttle.

I reset the choke to the factory setting (I think) it calls for 3 rich.

It still takes a long time to come down from fast idle and choke, but it is a little better.

It has an electric choke, but the wire going to the choke housing is only reading 7.5 volts. I was assuming that this should be 12 V? Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the choke circuit so I can trace the wiring and find out if there is an issue causing the drop in voltage? Is 7.5 volts correct? I tried using a 12V tapped on the battery directly to the choke and it seems to respond (read - come down from fast idle) better.

Also, the choke also seems to have a pipe for manifold heat along with the electric choke housing, what gives. I've heard of electric choke, manual choke, and manifold heated choke, but is there an electric + manifold heat for the choke?

Thanks,

Dave

Nope, wire is driven off the alternator and 7.5 volts is about right. But I will bet the heater coil is bad and that's why it takes so long to come off the high idle. You can check to see if you have continuity thru the heater coil, if it is open then replace it.

Thanks, to check continuity, should I put one lead on the terminal and one on the coil itself? or on the backing plate behind the coil?

My 1984 has two spade connectors on the choke heater. If you only have one then any clean engine ground will do. Clean metal on the carb or intake or even the negative terminal on the battery.

Thanks. Checked the continuity, nothing. I tried the same thing on my other 460 with a new carb and got a good reading so I know that my technique is right. I ordered a new choke thermostat today, $75 ouch. Hope this works.

Yeah, they're not cheap because of the 7.5 volts off the alternator, instead of the 12 Volt version.
