Confirm things to check for shift/brake interlock issue
Morning, All...
After do a search on "interlock", I see this is a common problem, but I was hoping someone might be willing to help clarify the items I need to check (in order of "difficulty" and "cost"). Fyi, this is on my '01 Expy 5.4 4x4 which won't shift out of "Park" even when the brake is depressed firmly:
Possible causes I've checked already:
-Brake lights are currently functioning fine--as are all other electrics (but I have not checked any fuses yet).
-I have had the cruise control recall performed.
This shift interlock problem has been very sporadic for about a year now, but
I did recently have a problem with my windshiled leaking onto the GEM. The the only apparent "sympton" was my blower fan not turning-off when the ignition was turned to position "0". After having the windshield re-bonded to the chassis, the leak was fixed, the GEM dried out and everything has been functioning fine since then, but the interlock problem has become constant.
So, to make sure I'm on the right track...the items I should check tonite are:
-all fuses (any relays, too?)
-the spring and connectors on the brake pedal multifunction switch
-Anything else?
Is there an actual "shift interlock switch" which I should check--or is this a function of the brake pedal switch, the fuses/relays and the GEM? Could this be my GEM?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated--as always. The wife's getting tired of shifting into "Neutral" before each start and let's face it--no one wins when the wife is unhappy
Thanks, guys....
Tim G.

On the 01, the interlock circuit is isolated from the brake light circuit and from the issues concerning the recall.
I would suggest to replace the brake light switch. It has a second section that is used for signaling, separate from the brake light circuit.
If the problem persists with a new switch, it's likely an issue either with the wiring at the switch or the interlock itself is sticky.

Out of curiosity, which is the "preferred" service/repair manual for these trucks; Haynes, Chilton or Bentley? Definitely need to order one of them for this job--as well as for replacing my oil pressure and temperature sending units which both seem to be showing their age.
Thanks again,
Tim

Like mentioned above it could be your brake light switch, here's a post I wrote up concerning my 99 (but I believe your 01 to be the same) dealing with the failure of the brake light side of the switch but it also shows the interlock side so you get an idea how the switch works for the interlock. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...lairified.html

Gentlemen-
The new brake switch resolved it. $11.59 at Autozone.
The R&R itself only took about 5 mins, but figuring out how to get my 6' 2" 230 lb frame down into the footwell in such a way that I could use both hands for the job...that took about 15 mins. At least there was more room down there than on my Subaru
I really appreciate both of you steering me in the right direction.
Cheers,
Tim G.

Much appreciated!
