Whats a good size for exhaust tips?

Ya right now i have some chrome tip on there that was just for temporary purposes it's 3" my stock pipe's width is like 2.5/8 ", I been reading where people been using 3.5-4.5 inches stainless tips is there some performance increase with going big on the tip? I was looking at the slant cut tips they any good seem to go with the body lines. How far out should the tip come out from right at the body or a little past? The shop that put my muffler on threw this temp. tip on until I could get a better one but they cut the whole stock pipe off from where it bends to go out off and welded the 14 inch tip, I dont know how there gonna put the new tip on with out adding pipe and they have to add pipe from the outlet of the muffler all the way out right? Or could they still just weld her on? Thanks

My Magnaflow tips are 3.5" slanted and look good. They are 18" inches long. So depending on what tips you buy, you might need to shorten the pipe more than you already have. Large long tips usually give off a little more noise, but no real performance gain.

My personal opinion on length is even with the body, or up to an inch under. NOTHING sticking out further than the body. I should take some pictures of some of the vehicles out here that look frickin' RIDICULOUS with theor pipes sticking out 5-6". Out the back you can go 1-2", but none out the side. I'm sure I'll get flamed by someone saying their truck looks great with a pipe sticking out the side 5", but you asked for opinions, right?

I went with the 3.5" chrome magnaflow tips with the slanted cut. They line up with the body great, have great sound. SS is nice if you plan to keep the truck forever but chrome will last years if kept clean. Here's a couple pics - should look nicer but the WX here is cloudy and rainining. From some angles it looks as if the tips extend beyond the body but in reality they're line up perfectly with the slope of the bumper and do not extend quite as far as the uppper edge of the bumper.

It's not the best pic, but I have 4" exhaust tips on my truck. They came like that from Borla.

Anything bigger and it looks tacky. I see trucks down here all the time that have 5" or larger tips and they look terrible. Especially when they come out at the corners of the bumper. I don't like it. 3.5-4" is about perfect. Anything larger and you better drive a diesel.
